August 13, 1948
• The Fourth District Convention of the American Legion Department of Missouri was held in Rock Port last Sunday with the largest number of attendance. Over 500 were present.
• Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the Bartholomew Mortuary for Pvt. Harold D. Wooten, who was killed in action near Widdern, Germany, April 7, 1945. Pvt. Wooten, who died at the age of 19 years, two months, and five days, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wooten of Phelps City.
• Erich Ernsting, who has already added two new residences to Rock Port’s modern homes, has started a third house, which will be located just south of the Ernsting home in Sickler’s addition.
• All rural schools in Atchison County will open for a new term on Monday, August 30.
• The Atchison County Extension Service will hold a balanced farming field day September 1 at the Albert Rolf farm five miles east and two miles north of Westboro.
August 9, 1973
• Rock Port’s bid for a state champion Legion baseball team was cut short as the team lost both games of the District playoffs with Third District champions Liberty.
• Kimosabi: “Just completed a ride on the nearly finished I-29 stretch of highway in Missouri…The new weigh station at the north end is going to provide a big increase in revenue from speeders and overweight trucks.”
• A huge hole along the bank of Rock Creek is threatening the football field with eventual erosion into the creek. Erosion is also threatening the foundation of the Cass Street bridge and has almost undermined the athletic field’s fence.
• Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Moore and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Hindman left last Friday for an exciting two week tour of Alaska. The trip, which leaves from Seattle, Washington, will be made by plane, bus, and boat.
• Rock Port Elementary was the scene of a smooth-running 4-H Achievement Day July 27. One hundred twenty-five blue ribbons were awarded.
• A state law signed by Governor Bond on controlling ambulances will have a serious effect on ambulance service in Atchison County. Funeral homes will no longer be able to provide ambulance services.
August 6, 1998
• Jay Hunter and Bryan Carey of Rock Port were among 73 junior golfers who participated in the Si Lantzy Memorial Junior Open Golf Tournament held in mid-July at the Falls City Country Club. In the boys’ 14-15 age group, Jay placed first (after a tie-breaker) by shooting an 80 on 18 holes and Bryan came in third with an 83.
• Before the sweltering summer sun fades for the final time this season, the Missouri Lottery has a “Ticket to Ride” for one last summer rendezvous. A 1999 Harley-Davidson motorcycle awaits six lucky lottery players plus $1,500 cash in six weekly drawings.
• Mr. and Mrs. Loren DeMott will observe their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, August 16, at the Senior Nutrition Site in Rock Port. They were married on May 28, 1938, at the Methodist Church parsonage in Stanberry.
• Dalton Jones, son of Rick and Lori Jones, won second place in the Mark Jewell Children Photography Contest.
• Eighteen members of the Rock Port High School Class of 1988 gathered for their 10 year class reunion July 31 and August 1, 1998.
