August 27, 1948
• Estes Park in Colorado appears to attract residents of this community. Recent visitors to that pleasure resort included the Temple Bentley family, Mr. and Mrs. John Stoner and daughter, Patricia, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Smith and daughter, Isabel.
• An ad in this week’s issue calls attention to the fact that the board of directors of Watson Consolidated School District will sell the schoolhouses and outbuildings in High Creek, Bethany, Pleasant Valley, Cottonwood Grove, and Sunny Grove rural districts. The school activities of the consolidated district will be centered in the central building at Watson and the outlying school districts will be abandoned.
• Last Sunday on the city golf course, “Mose” Andermann became city golf champion in the finals of the match play, which has been in progress several weeks. He defeated Norman Long in the finals, being one up in 36 holes. In the women’s handicap tournament, Sue Burke was the winner, defeating Lillian Wessler.
• P.W. Holliway has sold his recreation parlor to Walter Slemp. Mr. Holliway has conducted the business the last nine years.
• Rock Port’s city water pressure was so low Monday that residents on the hills had no service at all and the downtown users had only a trickle.
August 23, 1973
• Karen Koehler, 17, from Germany, visited the area recently. Her father, Fritz, had worked for the Reid Grain Co. as a prisoner of war from 1944 to 1946. During her stay, she saw two plays at the Mule Barn Theater, toured Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, visited Truman Library, visited Boys Town, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Leisman of Rock Port took her to see Wounded Knee, the Black Hills, and Yellowstone National Park.
• Rock Port school began classes August 22 with 707 students registered. That’s a decrease of 61 students from last year.
• A ribbon cutting ceremony August 31 will open the completed section of I-29. The completed section runs from the Iowa line to the interchange with US 136 east of Rock Port.
August 20, 1998
• New teachers at Rock Port R-II include Sheila Snodgrass, junior high math; Clay Vogler, vocational agriculture; Jason Adams, junior high social studies; Melissa Polinoski, K-12 art; and Olive Smith, 5-12 instrumental music and 7-8 vocal music.
• The blood drive was a great success as 73 donors responded to the call to donate blood at the Red Cross Blood Drive. The event was sponsored by New Horizons.
• ’Round Town: “Mr. and Mrs. James Wiles of Weeping Water, Nebraska, stopped by the office to share a memorable moment in their lives. Sixty-three years ago, the couple was traveling to Maryville to get hitched, but the prevailing darkness cut their trip short and they stopped in Rock Port. She changed into her wedding dress in the bathroom at Rock Port Oil. They went to the Methodist Church parsonage August 17, 1935, and were married that day.”
• Curt Graham, Hyatt Haynes, and Chris Volker attended a youth conference in Washington, D.C. The trip was sponsored by the United Methodist Church.
• Students at Rock Port R-II paid their respects to the American flag with the Pledge of Allegiance, thanks to flags donated by the Ralph Greer American Legion Post.
