The members of BSA Scout Troop 88 of Tarkio recently embarked on an unforgettable expedition that took them through Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico. But before these adventurers could immerse themselves in the beauty of Philmont, they tested their mettle with the roaring waters of the Arkansas River in Canon City, Colorado.

Their journey began with a thrilling 20-mile white water rafting trip through the famous Royal Gorge. Guided by the currents and their camaraderie, the troop sailed down the rapids, setting the tone for the adventures that awaited them.

The Philmont leg of their journey was no ordinary trek. Over the course of 12 days, the scouts, originally scheduled for a 61-mile trek, doubled their steps and clocked an impressive 127 miles. Their path was interspersed with activities that showcased the rich offerings of Philmont. Jacob Lester, Bo Peregrine, Isaac Vette, and Teahen Hannah were accompanied by their fathers, making this adventure a bonding experience for families.

Troop 88 members conquered the challenges of rock climbing and rappelling. They rode across vast landscapes on horseback, learned the art of fly fishing, and tested their sharpshooting skills with 30.06 target shooting. Amidst these exhilarating experiences, a chuck wagon dinner offered them a taste of traditional cowboy fare. Wildlife sightings added more thrill to their journey, including a memorable encounter with a bear.

Highlighting their physical prowess and determination, the members of the troop climbed Mount Phillips, a towering peak standing at 11,742 feet. Isaac, Tim, and Bo further elevated this experience by later reaching the summit of the famed Tooth of Time.

As this chapter of their adventures concludes, Boy Scout Troop 88 is already gearing up for their next big escapade. The scouts have set their sights beneath the surface as they prepare for a scuba certification. The first step in this new journey is a scuba experience planned for September 9 at the Clarinda Pool. With hopes high, the troop aims to be certified for open water dives by early 2024.
