September 24, 1948
• Twenty juniors and seniors are enrolled in typing I at Fairfax High School. They have learned the alphabet and can type paragraphs. They are now ready for the top row of keys, which consists of figures and characters.
• Atchison County’s draft board last week finished its work of registering young men who come within the age limits of the present selective service law. Six hundred forty-eight men have registered and 218 of the registrants were single, non-fathers and not veterans, making them eligible for military service provided they pass physical examinations.
• Between 70 and 80 entries competed in the Western Class Horse Show held at the 4-State Roundup grounds Wednesday night of last week.
• Congressman William C. Cole of St. Joseph spoke to members of the County Liner 4-H Club and others in the high school auditorium Tuesday night. He spoke about the workings of Congress and the many steps that must be taken to get federal laws passed.
September 27, 1973
• Mrs. Maud Prettyman was named a prize winner in a national contest and will have her choice of three paid vacations for two. The week’s stay options are Disney World, Miami Beach, or Las Vegas. In addition, she will receive a treasure chest of nationally advertised items.
• The Fairfax High School Band will be one of 91 junior high and high school bands to participate in the 1973 Band Day activities at the University of Kansas September 29.
• Rain failed to dampen the spirit of auctioneer Gene Carder as he worked to gain the high dollar for the multitude of items donated to the Community Club auction Monday night in Fairfax. The auction raised $568 and proceeds from the food project will probably bring the net to near $600.
• Mrs. Bette Kent had the side of her car damaged Tuesday morning on Fairfax Main Street when a tourist pulled from a parking space in front of the Thiesfeld Clothing store into her path. The tourist was given a summons.
• The Fairfax Bulldogs dropped their second 275 Conference game in as many starts Friday night as West Nodaway posted a hard fought 12 to 7 victory on the Rockets’ field.

• Robert and Lois (Taylor) Hecker of Fairfax will observe their 50th wedding anniversary September 30. They were married on that date in 1948 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Bob is a veteran of WWII and a farmer and Lois is a homemaker.
• Judy Holtz and her general science class have been studying about getting into space so each member of the class built a rocket and took turns blasting them off last week. The class had to calculate the distance and time in the air as part of their project.
• The William White Chapter DAR recently presented Fairfax R-3 School with a new American flag. The old flag that was used at home football games was worn out.
• The Fairfax Wolverine 4-H Club has decorated the barrels on Main Street with fall decor.
• The Fairfax Optimist Club held a Punt, Pass, and Kick competition for youth from Fairfax and Tarkio September 26 at the football field in Fairfax. There were 20 participants in the competition ranging in age from 8 to 13 years of age.
