October 29, 1948

• The lobby of the Citizens’ Bank is undergoing redecoration this week, with Clyde Andermann doing the work. The application of fresh paint brightens up the interior of the bank in a marked degree.

• Richard Cooper of south of Rock Port is the first farmer to report to The Mail that he has finished his annual chore of corn-harvesting. Indications are that a great percentage of Atchison County’s crop will be out of the fields by November 1. Harvesting conditions have been ideal, and the use of mechanical pickers has hastened the chore.

• The Rock Port Blue Jays defeated the Savannah Savages 33-20, making their record 4-0 in the Tri-State Conference.

• Pupils of Miss Colleen Ammons’ dancing classes in Rock Port and Tarkio presented a program Wednesday evening.

October 25, 1973

• Charles Jackson “Jack” Hunt, 58, Rock Port Postmaster and lifelong resident of the Rock Port community, died October 18, 1973. He began his long association with the post office in 1936 as a clerk in the Rock Port Post Office.

• Virgil Million, retired businessman of Rock Port, received his 50 year pin as a Mason in ceremonies Monday night at the North Star Lodge No. 157 AF&AM in Rock Port. State Representative Hardin C. Cox presented the pin. Worshipful Master presiding at the ceremonies was Clifford Peck.

• Greenley’s Market advertised the following great food buys: whole frying chickens, 49¢ per pound; corned beef brisket, $1.29 per pound; pork loin fritters, $1.19 per pound; all-meat wieners, 69¢ for a 12-ounce package; shoestring potatoes, 39¢ for a 20-ounce bag; Jell-O, 10¢ for a 3-ounce package; Nabisco Oreos, 53¢ for a 15-ounce package; and bananas, 10¢ per pound.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “They Call Me Trinity” and “Mary Poppins.”

• The Rock Port Blue Jays defeated the Fairfax Bulldogs 7-3 Friday night at Fairfax. The name of the game seemed to be defense, as no scoring was done until the fourth quarter, when Fairfax kicked a field goal.

October 22, 1998

• Delmas and Bonnie Howell will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, November 1, at a reception at the Rock Port Baptist Church.

• Winners of the Rock Port McDonald’s coloring/poster contest were awarded prizes and treats at the restaurant Friday, October 16. Winners were Brittany Driskell, Bryon Sickman, Elyssa Ellison, Blair Floyd, Leslie Alitz, Janae Pearce, Jacob Gibson, Geneva Sickman, and Nick Powell.

• Jay Erdman and Gary Davis were named Rock Port Optimists-of-the-Year.

• In conjunction with Fire Safety Week, the Head Start students were visited by Smokey the Bear and took rides on a Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department fire truck.

• Tim and Sharleen Bothwell, Watson, Missouri, are the parents of a son, Dillon James Aaron, born October 7 at Community Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri.

• Marlene Demott and Valeria Grossman were the Power Points winners for week six and seven.

• The Blue Jays start district play this Friday at Blue Jay Stadium. The first 140 fans will get a kazoo to add to the Blue Jay spirit.
