November 5, 1948
• Atchison County joined the Truman landslide in Tuesday’s presidential election. The Democratic candidate polled 2,478 votes to 2,160 for Dewey. There was only one vote for Henry Wallace in the county, which came from East Lincoln Township.
• The carnival staged at the Memorial Building Sunday evening by the Rock Port School attracted a capacity crowd. After all the bills have been paid, it is estimated the school will show a profit of $750. The money will go toward the purchase of new band uniforms.
• Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Howell have the basement excavation finished and are ready to start construction on a dwelling which will be erected in the Savage addition just across the street from the Bischof home.
• Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cooper of Langdon received a telegram Tuesday that the remains of their son, Lieutenant Vernon Eugene Cooper, are being returned from Italy for burial.
• A number of relatives and friends helped Ed. Underwood celebrate his 84th birthday at his home north of town on Highway No. 275. The day was beautiful and a basket dinner was held, pictures taken, and a game of horseshoes took place.
November 1, 1973
• Blue Jay Corner – “If you had one place to go?” Debbie Schlup, Russia; Eric Miller, anywhere but school; Sean Easley, down on the bayou; Rick Hendrickson, to the moon; and Cathy McMahon, anywhere out of town.
• A sign that reads “You’re In Blue Jay Country” was painted on the side of the white shed in the Rock Port school parking lot by Mrs. Lenore Windes, a former art teacher at Rock Port.
• Rebecca Boettner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Boettner of Rock Port, has won an all expense paid trip in “Consumer Education” to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago, Illinois.
• The Continental Club held its regular meeting at the Memorial Building October 10 with 16 members present. Hostesses Mrs. Lee Edward McCoy and Mrs. Robert Elliott served Mulligan stew, hot bread, and dessert to the ladies who worked on the project of cleaning and painting the interior of the Memorial Building.
October 29, 1998
• The Rock Port third grade students and teachers visited an outdoor classroom in the countryside at the Tony Scamman farm Friday, October 16. They went on a hike into the bluffs taking a bag, clipboard, pencil, and crayons, to collect and record what they saw.
• The room mothers have completed four cubicles for lockers for elementary students. The mothers hired Scott Morehouse to build the cubbies with Dan Burke volunteering to help. They were painted by D.J. Burke, Sheila Cooper, Michelle Deatz, and Michele Pfeil.
• Atchison County Library patrons will soon be accessing the internet at the library in Rock Port. The library received a grant to install a direct communication line to support a computer network. They will have three operational workstations and two of those will be for public use.
• Security improvements were made for the Circuit Clerk & Recorder’s Office at the Atchison County Courthouse in Rock Port. Security measures include a three work station area concealed from the public by a tall L-shaped counter and hinged doors.
