November 12, 1948
• Mrs. Ivan Nigh of Watson has been fortunate enough to win a 21-jewel Bulova watch for writing the winning letter on “How I Use Perfex,” a program sponsored by KMA.
• Rex Shandy has purchased from Miss Emma Helmer the three Helmer estate business houses in Rock Port: the two-story brick building recently vacated by Mahan Hardware Co.; the adjoining building occupied by Gratz Bartholomew’s sporting goods store and the offices of the Rupe & Phelps trucking line; and the metal-clad building occupied by the Rock Port Sheet Metal Co.
• The small son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lawless, living on the Sutton farm southeast of Rock Port, lost the four fingers of his left hand when he became caught in a hoist of a corn elevator.
November 8, 1973
• Members of the Rock Port Community Garden Club are preparing for their Christmas show “Holiday Moods” November 17 at the Methodist educational building in Rock Port. The event will feature Christmas trees, swags, wreaths, table centerpieces, gift wrapping, and niches.
• Rock Port volunteer firemen responded to two costly fires in a 10-day period. The first was a two-story frame house belonging to Virgil Walter, northeast of Rock Port. Arson is suspected. The second was the Cecil Hughes home west of Rock Port. The Hughes family lost all of their belongings.
• The Rock Port swimming pool has been the target of vandals during the past month, and much damage has been done to the interior of the dressing rooms, bathrooms, and concession building.
• Greg Chamberlain of Rock Port has resigned as chief juvenile officer of the five-county Northwest Missouri area. He was forced to resign due to new regulations stipulating he must live in Maryville and have a degree in psychology or sociology.
• Mrs. Kenneth Long, Jr., of Rock Port will assume management of the Rock Port Sales Pavilion Cafe November 8. The cafe was formerly under the management of Mrs. Harry Hepner of Rock Port.
November 5, 1998
• The Rock Port cross country team had a great weekend. They traveled to Liberty, Missouri, for the District Cross Country meet October 31, and returned as champs. Rock Port was the first public school to win the boys’ district title in 27 years.
• The Rock Port Elementary held a pumpkin decorating pageant. Winners were: 3rd, Mrs. Hughes’ kindergarten class; 2nd, Mrs. Zimmerman’s first grade; and 1st, Mrs. Garst’s third grade. The pumpkins were donated by Willie Holmes and the judges were Dale Million, Zella Davis, and Irene Rice.
• Susan Batschelet of Rock Port will spend the semester studying in Wales with an International Studies program conducted by Central College of Pella, Iowa.
• Several ghosts, goblins, and ghouls braved the frightful, rainy weather October 31 for the 25th annual Halloween Parade at Citizens Bank & Trust.
• The Rock Port Rotary Club has had an outstanding response to the effort of raising money for the Ministerial Alliance food pantry. Donations were matched by the Allan Shawn Feinstein $1,000,000 Challenge Grant to Alleviate Hunger. They’ve raised $6,000 plus so far which will give them a $12,000 reserve to keep the pantry stocked.
