Tarkio High School hosted local veterans and members of the community at a Veterans Day Assembly Friday, November 10, 2023, in the high school gym. The kindergarten class sang the “Veterans Day” song and then handed out handmade thank you cards to the veterans in attendance.

 

Tarkio High School and West Point graduate Shae DeRosier was the guest speaker at the assembly. In a prerecorded message, 2nd Lt. DeRosier described his experiences in the military so far and thanked all veterans for their service and sacrifice. He is currently stationed at Fort Novosel, Alabama.

 

Everyone in attendance honored veteran Jim Morrison, above, who will soon be turning 100. His family is hosting a birthday celebration for him Sunday, December 3, 2023, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the new Westboro Fire Station on Main Street in Westboro, Missouri.

The Tarkio High School Band performed “The Star Spangled Banner” and the “Armed Forces Medley” for those in attendance at the Veterans Day Assembly.

FAIRFAX

Fairfax R-3 School has been doing a Veterans Day service project called Helping Our Heroes Points for Pennies. Each class and the staff added pennies and bills (which were positive points) to their own containers and silver coins (nickels, dimes, and quarters) to other containers (which were negative points). The two classes with the most points (preschool and 4th grade) were selected to present the donations at the Veterans Day Assembly. A total of $1,000 was donated to the VA Home in Cameron, Missouri, to purchase puzzles, craft items, books, etc. Another $1,000 was donated to Wounded Warrior Guide Service (represented by Mike Lewis) to help offset costs for an upcoming hunting trip (food, lodging, travel, etc.).

 

The Fairfax preschoolers sang the “Veterans Day” song.

 

The Fairfax 5th and 6th grade choir sang “We Honor You” at the assembly and the band (below) played “Spirit of America.”

The third graders talked about the American flag at the Fairfax Veterans Day Assembly.

 

The Fairfax fourth graders described the different branches of the military at the Veterans Day Assembly.

ROCK PORT

The veterans were invited to the elementary where they walked the halls and were cheered by the students and staff.

 

Retired Captain Scott Pfeifer was the guest speaker during the assembly. Scott is originally from Burlington Junction, Missouri.

 

Dylan Kemerling, RPHS student body president, welcomed everyone to the assembly and had the honor of introducing her uncle and guest speaker, Ret. Capt. Scott Pfeifer.

 

The Rock Port High School choir, accompanied by Richard Boettner and Mrs. Abbly Palmer, sang the national anthem and a tribute to the veterans.

 

Mrs. Abby Palmer and the high school band performed a military medley honoring all the branches of the military.

 

Mr. Thomas Herron read the meanings of the folds of the flag as Mary Kahn and Steve Duren folded the flag.

 

Brandon Athen played one part of “Taps.” He and Mrs. Palmer performed a trumpet duet at the end of the ceremony at Rock Port High School.
