November 26, 1948
• On Wednesday of last week, a group of good neighbors gathered at the Raymond Horton home in Benton township, south of Langdon, to assist in picking Mr. Horton’s corn. Twenty-seven men used six pickers and four elevators to husk about 5,000 bushels of corn during the day. A bountiful noon meal was provided and prepared by 17 neighbor women.
• Pfc. Jack D. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Smith of Langdon, is now serving with the 24th Medical Battalion, a unit of the 24th Infantry Division, in Kokura, Kyushu, Japan.
• Services for three servicemen whose bodies were recently returned from overseas were held. Funeral services for Pvt. Robert D. Langfelt took place Wednesday. He died on the Anzio Beachhead in Anzio, Italy, May 24, 1944, aged 20 years. Funeral services were held for Lieut. Vernon E. Cooper November 23. Lieut. Cooper lost his life on December 19, 1944, on the Island of Vis, near Yugoslavia. Graveside services were held Sunday for Cecil Smith, a veteran whose body was recently returned to the states for burial.
• Mrs. George E. Brown, CROP district supervisor, has asked Atchison County ministers to give a part of their Thanksgiving services to the dedication of the cars of grain collected for the use of hungry people overseas. The people of Atchison County have sent not just grain, but the spirit of Thanksgiving to 43 European nations.
November 22, 1973
• Atchison County schools have found a gold mine at the I-29 weigh station northwest of Rock Port with the fines paying off better than the house-take of a Las Vegas slot machine at the rate of $1,000 a week with the four schools splitting the money.
• After many years of wearing the same old uniforms, the Rock Port Blue Jays basketball team finally has brand new double-knit uniforms.
• The National Honor Society at Rock Port High School raised $500 during the Cerebral Palsy Walk-A-Thon.
• A record $813 per acre was paid for 175 acres of Missouri bottom land for $142,275. Ralph Mulvania, Rock Port, purchased the farm land from Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wedel at public auction November 15.
• Mrs. Jack Scamman won the sweepstakes award at the flower show held November 17 at the Methodist Church. The sweepstakes award is given to the individual who receives the most blue ribbons. There were 163 entries in the adult division and 80 junior entries.

• Mr. Sayer’s College American History class took a field trip to Rock Creek Station and Homestead National Park located in Fairbury and Beatrice, Nebraska. Rock Creek Station is a Road Ranch on the Oregon California Trail.
• Cox and Sons Insurance of Rock Port has once again been awarded membership in Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa’s Million Dollar Club.
• Veterans visited the sixth grade classes at Rock Port to commemorate Veterans Day. They also left decorated cards at the Memorial Building, where Ralph Greer Post #49 Commander Kenny Lee showed them the Ralph Greer doll. The doll, which is dressed in a WWI uniform, was shipped home by Ralph Greer in 1918.
