December 10, 1948

• Monday marked the 40th anniversary of Geo. W. Boettner’s association with the Bank of Atchison County. Mr. Boettner entered the bank’s services on December 6, 1908, after attending Tarkio College and succeeding D.T. Wyatt as assistant cashier.

• The body of Cpl. Warren Wade Zeigel, son of Wm. A. Zeigel of Tarkio, is being returned aboard the U.S. Army Transport Dalton Victory and will be taken to Tarkio for burial. Cpl. Zeigel’s remains were among those who had been temporarily interred in military cemeteries on Saipan, in Japan, and on the Philippine Islands.

• Paul Estus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Estus of Rock Port and stationed at Pearl Harbor, was on the rescue ship Pendora which picked up 33 survivors of a transport plane that crashed into the Pacific Ocean several days ago. The crash site was about 1,000 miles from Hawaii.

December 6, 1973

• The girls in the physical education class at Rock Port High School are now taking gun safety. The girls learned about different guns, bullets and shells, how to carry and hold a gun correctly, as well as how to load, aim, and fire, and are shooting at targets with B.B. guns.

• Cold weather hasn’t stopped the weddings. According to Albert Kelly, Atchison County Circuit Clerk and Recorder, there were 12 couples who went to the altar at the courthouse in Rock Port this past week.

• Donna Haer has been named Co-ed correspondent for the 1973-74 school year. Co-ed magazine is published nationally by Scholastic Magazines, Inc. for home economics students and contains articles on fashion, food, beauty, and home furnishings and fiction.

• Rep. Hardin Cox of Rock Port has announced his candidacy for State Senator for the 12th District. The ninth-year legislator released his campaign slogan – Hardy Tries Harder – but said he will schedule a series of news conferences to reveal his other campaign plans.

• Albert Kelly, who has been the Atchison County Circuit Clerk and Recorder of Deeds for the past 43 years, was presented with a Meritorious Award for his efforts with the federal passport application acceptance program.

December 3, 1998

• The Rock Port Market advertised the following specials: 4 lb. Shurfine sugar, $1.29; 24 oz. Shurfresh cottage cheese, $1.99; Del Monte premium bananas, 3 for $1; value pack split fryer breast, $1.19 per pound; and California sweet navel oranges, 6 for $1.

• A pipe and brass concert will be held at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port Sunday, December 6.

• On Monday, November 23, two individuals were charged with five counts of illegally taking a deer north and east of Watson, Missouri, on Highway B. The deer was shot from a public roadway without permission from the land owner.

• The Rock Port FFA Chapter put up a new swing set at the city park. A generous donation from Kim Bunton with Cabin Fever and funds from the Rock Port Park Board purchased the equipment.

• Doug Vette of Rock Port was injured when he was struck by a Freightliner while he was loading a vehicle onto his tow truck on Interstate 29 in Atchison County.
