December 31, 1948
• The sister of President Harry S. Truman will be visiting Rock Port Wednesday, January 5. Miss Mary Jane Truman of Grandview, Missouri, Grand Conductress of the Missouri Order of Eastern Star, will come to Rock Port to install the recently elected officers of the local lodge.
• A group of Rock Port youth had a lot of fun Monday night sledding about the streets of the town on a big bobsled pulled by a tractor.
• It sure takes a raft of money to keep afloat these days.
• Rev. J.B. Walrafen, who has been pastor of the Centennial Methodist Church the past 12 years, will leave the post about the middle of January. He and Mrs. Walrafen will locate on the farm of their son, Loren Walrafen, near Emporia, Kansas.
• Willard Bradley, who is in the Navy, has written his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bradley, from Taingsto, China, with the information that his ship was to visit Hong Kong, then Singapore and finally Greece.
December 20, 1973
• Mrs. Pierce’s fifth grade class at Rock Port made candles for Christmas. Potato chip cans were cut in half for molds. The inside of the cans made wonderful forms for the candles. The wax was scented and put into the molds and was then beaten and put on top of the candle to give it a snowy look. A holly leaf was added to the top.
• SM3 Robert Max Kirk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Kirk of Rock Port, is deployed on a Unitas cruise aboard the USS Robert H. McCard (DD-822), a reserve ship. Unitas is a joint effort of the US Naval ships and ships from various South American countries operating together. It also acts as a goodwill cruise to South America allowing South Americans to see what the United States Naval personnel are like.
• Two drivers, one from Montana and another from Arkansas, received speeding tickets after they were clocked for excessive speed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s airplane.
• No one was injured when a driver’s Mac trailer jackknifed on slick packed snow and ice and shoved a new 1974 pickup truck through the Bennington Chevrolet showroom wall. Several thousand dollars worth of damage was reported.
• Gerald Attebery, 34, of Laplata, Missouri, the champion raccoon scraper of the world, came to Rock Port briefly to help Harold Hulett, owner of Northwest Missouri Fur & Supplies. Attebery averages 300 hides in an eight-hour day and in the six day period last week, he scraped 2,400 coons.
December 17, 1998
• The National Honor Society recently selected the second quarter Good School Citizens. They were Tawni Gebhards and Cory Roup.
• An average of 85 men and youth from Rock Port’s community gathered daily at the First Lutheran Church for God & Man services each day December 7-11.
• Along with snow and Christmas cheer in Rock Port on Sunday, December 6, came the Miracle on Market Street as the First Lutheran Church presented its live nativity. The scene also included live sheep, chickens, a pony, and a donkey. A chili supper and performance by the children’s choir was also enjoyed by all who attended.
• Charlie Clodfelter and Jennifer Umbarger were crowned the Rock Port High School Christmas Ball King and Queen Saturday, December 12. Crownbearers were Jalainey McMahon and Dakota Handley.
• Sharon Meyer, Circuit Clerk & Ex Officio Recorder of Atchison County, has announced her retirement effective December 31, at 4:30 p.m. Nearly 23 years ago, Sharon began her service with Atchison County when she was hired in August of 1975 to microfilm all records in the courthouse.
