• Funeral services were held Saturday in Bedford, Iowa, for J. R. Locke. Mr. Locke was a member of the Tarkio College board of directors. He was widely known for his year-round generosity and especially for his kindness to needy persons at Christmas time. He was called Bedford’s “Santa Claus.”
• The story of Mary Lee Read, a relative of Arthur Low and Mrs. L. A. Crabtree of Tarkio, and her unusual method of spreading warmth and cheer in busy New York City made the January issue of Coronet magazine. For two weeks during the Christmas season, Mrs. Read presents a program of carols and Christmas melodies for hurrying travelers at Grand Central Station. She has been the organist there since 1928.
• A bolt of lightning started a house fire at the I.J. Nickerson home in Rock Port Monday when it interacted with the electrical system. The lightning blew out through a wall plug, shattering an electric clock attached to the socket. The floor, wall, and sill were damaged and heavy drapes at the window were ruined.
• Henry Prather, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Prather, will sail Tuesday from New York aboard the “Americana” for Germany. His work with the Bureau of Displacement Commission will consist of interviewing and screening emigrants.
January 10, 1974
• The Kenneth St. Clairs entertained Dr. and Mrs. Horace G. Underwood of Seoul, South Korea, on December 22, 1973. Dr. Underwood, a third-generation Presbyterian missionary to Korea, is an executive director of Yonsei University of Seoul. He and his wife were visiting their son, Dr. Horace H. Underwood, who is a member of the Tarkio College faculty, and his family.
• Mrs. Carolyn Craven presented Mrs. Virginia Noland with a new sewing machine given by the U Save Mart just before Christmas. Mrs. Craven is manager of the store here.
• Miss Beverly Halliday, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Halliday of Tarkio, departed from New York City December 15, 1973, for Bangladesh. She will serve as a missionary under the World Mission Prayer League. Beverly will be in Bangladesh for four years. The first two years she will study the language of the country and later serve as a nurse in the hospital, which is being constructed. Beverly graduated from Tarkio High School in 1969 and the Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha in 1972.
• A new academic building at Huron College in Huron, South Dakota, has been named The Timmins Fine Arts Center. It was through the leadership and direction of Dr. Timmins that the nearly $1 million facility became a reality. Dr. Timmins is in his sixth year as president of Huron College. Prior to that, he was assistant to the president at Tarkio College.

• The Tarkio Lady Indians won the 51st annual LeBlond Holiday Basketball Tournament in St. Joseph, Missouri.
• Allie Redfern, CDM, Dietary Manager, has retired after nearly 25 years of service at the Integrated Health Services nursing home in Tarkio. During her time there, Allie worked for six different administrators.
• Charley Jones, a mail carrier for the Tarkio Post Office, delivered mail on Christmas Eve dressed as Santa Claus.
• A bale of hay was burned and extensive fire damage done to a tractor being driven by Richard Thomson of Tarkio. The incident occurred approximately six miles east of Tarkio.
