• Louis Bell will hold a public sale of cows, horses, mules, and farm machinery at his farm two miles south of Dotham on Monday, January 24.
• Harry Emrick, who has been associated with Max Stalcup in the grocery business under the name of the E. & S. Grocery since August of last year, has accepted a position as assistant cashier at the Exchange Bank of Fairfax. The grocery partnership has been dissolved and Mr. Stalcup is now in charge of the business. Harry was employed by the bank for several years prior to entering the grocery business.
• Mr. and Mrs. Emery Wake returned Saturday from a three week vacation to Glendale, Arizona, and Encino, California. They visited their daughter, Mrs. John Stevenson, and family in Glendale and Mrs. Wake’s sister, Mrs. Max Chomas, in California.
• A survey of the city of Fairfax was recently completed by a crew of engineers. The information gathered will be used in making plans and specifications for the new sewer system.
• In a report released by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, it was revealed that in 1948, there were 64 traffic accidents investigated by the patrol in Atchison County. Of those, two were fatal and four people were killed. There were 44 people injured in personal injury accidents and there were 26 property damage accidents with estimated damage totalling $47,995.
January 17, 1974
• Atchison and Holt counties will share in the proposed formation of an ambulance district. At a joint meeting in the Exchange Bank of Fairfax Monday night, both steering committees voted to join the two counties into a single proposed ambulance district, which will be responsible for providing ambulance services.
• The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare has approved a $158,844 Head Start grant to Northwest Missouri Economic Opportunity Corporation in Maryville. This will provide preschool training on a part-day basis for 124 children from low income families in Atchison, Nodaway, Gentry, Holt, and Worth counties.
• Thirty-six men turned out for the first Farm Night meeting at Elkdale community center Monday featuring a sausage and pancake feed. They also heard Bob Chapple talk about hay handling equipment.

• The Fairfax first grade class is taking a fun and exciting approach to learning about geography with their friend, Flat Stanley. The students mailed their Flat Stanleys to family and friends and one is even headed to Germany. These people are to treat the Flat Stanleys as their guests and then send him back with a write-up of what adventures he went on.
• The Fairfax kindergarten class made their resolutions for 1999. Some of them included: Emily VanGundy – I will share my toys at recess. Ashton Lewis – I will be nice to my sister. Dyllan Mattly – I will exercise in P.E.
• Dale and Shirley Wennihan sold Smith’s Tobacco in Fairfax to Scott and Kelly Smith. Smith’s Tobacco has been in the Smith family for approximately 53 years, having been started by Scott’s grandparents, Jennie and Fred Smith of Fairfax.
