January 21, 1949
• A Farmall M Tractor, taken from the Moore and Glenn Implement yard on Highway 59 in Tarkio, was recovered Tuesday morning about half a mile south of town. It was undamaged. This is the second tractor stolen from the area, the other one being one taken from the Seymour farm near Fairfax. That one has not been recovered yet.
• By popular request, the Tarkio public schools will offer the adult farmers’ evening school class through the vocational ag program under the direction of Max Van Hoozer. The class will be held on Monday evenings for a series of 10 sessions.
• A Westboro girl, Miss Gertrude Nolte, is in line for the coveted title of “Charm Girl of 1949” at Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska. Requirements are personality, poise, posture, conversational intelligence, attractiveness, and leadership.
• Three cases of automobile accessory thefts have been reported in Tarkio. Among the accessories are rearview mirrors and backup lights.
• Mail from the south was delayed in its arrival in Tarkio Thursday by the breakdown of an engine on Train No. 23 north of Kansas City.
• Tarkio, already blanketed by a two and half inch snow that fell Tuesday afternoon, received another coating Thursday morning. Less than one-half an inch fell. Temps varied from 41 degrees Saturday to a low of 3 below zero Wednesday morning.
January 24, 1974
• Dr. and Mrs. Robert Davis had as guests last week Mr. and Mrs. David Back and four children from Sydney, Australia. The Back family is in the United States for a tour and to enroll Mr. Back in Eastern University for the purpose of acquiring a Ph.D. in Business Administration.
• Carlos Madrid and Luis Sampedro are two Spanish speaking students attending Tarkio High School. Carlos is from Columbia, South America, and is living with the Byron Freeman family. Luis is from Mexico City, Mexico, and is living with the Carl F. Martin family.
• Statistics from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics rank Tarkio College sixth in defense among the 565 schools of the association and 10th in winning margin over their opponents. The Owls have held their opponents to 60.2 points per game in 11 games. In other departments, the Owls rank fourth in offense, second in rebounding, third in field goal percentage, and fourth in foul shot percentage.
• Mike Peregrine won an 8-track tape player for being second high salesman for the Tarkio FFA fruit sales, selling 60 boxes. Stan Egbert won a .22 rifle for being high salesman, selling 71 boxes.
January 21, 1999
• The Tarkio Lady Indians basketball team still has a perfect season record and won its third tournament of the season – the Fairfax Invitational.
• Ask Elsie Fae: Outrage of the Week – “Someone actually said to me last week, ‘I can’t believe you and Edna are sisters. She is such a lady.’ I won’t say who it was, but she’s a Fairfax beautician.”
• Cars were lined up at the car washes in Tarkio as people took advantage of the warmer-than-normal temperatures.
• The Tarkio Cub Scouts toured the Tarkio Avalanche office January 14. They were Duston Noland, Dillon Noland, Mitchell Madron, Matthew Brought, Adam Nelson, Tanner Umbarger, and David Hrabik, who were accompanied by their Den Mother, Terri Noland.
