The snowfall in Atchison County has been a doozy lately. Residents have had to deal with power outages lasting longer than 12 hours, being snowed in with many roads still being cleared on Monday after the snowfall Friday, postponements and cancellations of many school and sporting events and special activities including the Fairfax Basketball Tournament, negative temperatures and windchills, and business closures. Even gasoline availability became a hot commodity when local gas stations ran out after their supply trucks were unable to get here. Unfortunately, it looks like more of the “s” word is in this week’s forecast. Please remember to cover up as much as possible if you have to go outside, bring your domestic pets indoors during these frigid temps, and stay home whenever possible during these winter weather events.

East Atchison is celebrating its Winter Homecoming this week with a wrestling senior parents’ night celebration at 5:15 p.m. prior to the quad meet at the TAC Thursday, January 18 (wrestling begins at 5:30 p.m.) and basketball games beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the TAC on Friday, January 19. The Fairfax and Tarkio Winter Homecoming kings and queens will be crowned following the basketball games. Everyone is encouraged to attend these fun events and cheer on our local athletes.

Dine on delicious food this Saturday while supporting great causes. The Fairfax Fire Department Fish Fry (carp, catfish, and chicken) is Saturday, January 20, at 5:00 p.m. at the fire station. A benefit for Tim Pridell will also take place Saturday. That event will be held from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the Tarkio Community Building and will include a spaghetti dinner, silent auction, and live music.
