• Stoner Machine Shop has employed Paul Spainhower, who is an expert plowman and all-around blacksmith. The shop is now prepared to take care of all your blacksmithing and machine work. Get your plows, discs, and other farm machinery repaired and put in shape before spring.
• The Fairfax Christian Church Council is hosting a Groundhog Supper Wednesday, February 2. Admission is $1 per plate for adults and 50¢ for children. The menu will include sausage, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked beans, cabbage salad, hot biscuits, pie and coffee.
• J.C. Henson, Fairfax High School junior, won the 1948 Kiwanis Corn Yield Contest with 125 bushels per acre on his 5-acre plot. He was awarded a trophy and $20 in cash. The second place winner was Marlin Smith with 114 bushels to the acre.
• The heating plant is now being installed and cement is being poured for the elevator shaft at Fairfax Community Hospital.
• On Thursday evening of last week, 38 men, members of the Presbyterian Men’s Club, gathered at the church for the charter presentation program. The men’s club is now a part of the National Council of Presbyterian Men in the U.S. It is the sixth club to be chartered in Missouri and one of the first in the entire United States.

• Mrs. Clifford Smith, area representative for a home products company, recently won a sales contest which entitles her to a trip to Las Vegas in March.
• Linda Scarlett and Rick Martin were crowned Fairfax Homecoming queen and king.
• Kiwanians were treated to a slide program at Tuesday’s luncheon meeting at the Methodist Church. Dr. Franklin Gould gave a talk and showed pictures relating to his experiences as a missionary in Africa.
• Hunter’s Hy-Klas Food Store advertises the following specials: Duncan Hines cake mixes, 2 boxes for 89¢; California Snowball fresh cauliflower, 49¢ per head; Kleenex facial tissues, 3 200-count boxes for $1; fully cooked ham (whole or shank half), 89¢ per pound.

• Wayne and Dorothy Harrington of Fairfax will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, January 31. The Harringtons have six children, 17 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
• The first place winner in the Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament, sponsored by the Human Resources Advisory Committee at Community Hospital, is the Burney’s Team. Team members include Jeff Patton, Chris Burns, Kenny Durbin, Kari Baumgartner, Tara Swinehart, Melinda Patton, and Rita Miller.
• Lifeline, the device once leased by Community Hospital Association for people wanting extra assurance of help being nearby, has been replaced with a new system called SOS Signal. The Kiwanis Club helped with the installation.
• The Fairfax second graders are learning about the Chinese New Year. The class made two dragons out of construction paper, boxes, and tubes. They then got under the dragons and walked through the elementary classrooms to show off their hard work. The class will continue learning about China, including how to eat with chopsticks.
• Fairfax basketball homecoming candidates are: queens – Amanda Wheeler, Lacy Sly, and Traci Davis; and kings – Tim Oswald, Nate Easley, and Kirk Hawkins.
• Bud and Ted Simmons are celebrating providing their vehicle service for 20 years. For over 20 years, Simmons MFA Service has served the community by pumping gas, and providing oil changes, tire repair, selling tires and propane, and on the farm tire repair.
