• Woe is me! The groundhog saw his shadow Tuesday, which the believer in signs thinks means six weeks more of winter weather. Well, the country has gotten pretty well adapted to the most rugged winter weather experienced in years, and probably a few weeks more or less won’t make much difference.
• Mounting costs of everything that goes into the operation of the county’s needs are reflected in the 1949 budget which the county court has approved in recent days. The budget for the current year has been fixed at $178,237.51, which is an increase of $5,843.32 over the 1948 budget.
• Miss Verna Louise Herron, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Opal Herron, was among the more than 700 graduates at the first peacetime mid-year commencement at the University of Missouri.
• Reid’s Market, Rock Port, advertised Armour’s Star lard, 17¢ per pound; Blue Bonnet oleo, 35¢ per pound; and Folgers coffee, 47¢ per pound.

• Loraine L. Heckel was named Postmaster at Rock Port. Heckel has been officer-in-charge of the Rock Port Post Office since October 18, 1973. A 1933 graduate of Rock Port High School, he started work in the Rock Port Post Office in 1963.
• The Pony Express Council, Boy Scouts of America, has awarded the Silver Beaver Award to Maurice Forbis, Rock Port, for his distinguished service. This is the highest award which the council can bestow.
• The Fairfax hospital has acquired a phototherapy unit or “bilirubin light” for the nursery. This equipment was purchased with funds from the Robbie Alldredge Memorial Fund.
• Mr. and Mrs. P.J. Harlow, Rock Port, will observe their 60th wedding anniversary February 3. Harlow and Miss Flora Carlisle were married February 4, 1914, in York, Nebraska.
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre is “Walking Tall,” starring Joe Don Baker.

• King’s Auto has expanded its business by opening the old laundromat building adjacent to the store. The extra space will permit more floor space for shelving, displays, and storage. Richard and Bill Howell bought the business in June 1991.
• Stephen Proctor, Rock Port R-II student, has been selected to represent Rock Port on a youth tour of Washington, D.C. in April. Rock Port Telephone Company and Rock Port Cablevision are participating with the Foundation for Rural Services to send Stephen on the tour.
• The 1999 Wrestling Homecoming king and queen candidates are Chris Gebhards, Chad Rogers, Trevor Hale, Aubrey Chamberlain, Crystal Taylor, and Amber Hudson.
• The Rock Port Chamber of Commerce has purchased new welcome banners for Main Street.
• Featured as McDonald’s “Students of the Week” are Rock Port elementary students: Bryon Siekman, Austin Rice, Josh McConahay, Damond Wennihan, A.J. Hale, Michael Peeler, Kyle Driskell, David Cobb, Melissa Liess, Amber Wright, Talaina Reed, Crystal Harmon, Kim Graybill, and Thyra Davis.
