The month of February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. In these times of social media, technology and such a variety of electronics available to our youth, teen violence is more prevalent than ever. This can come in the form of bullying, harassment, verbal and/or sexual violence to name but a few. Unfortunately, hiding behind an electronic device gives many abusers seemingly more power to manipulate a victim.

Sadly, one in 12 high school students will experience some sort of teen dating violence and quite possibly struggle with the aftereffects, some into their adulthood. Depression, lack of self worth, and thoughts of suicide are but a few that can develop.

Statistics show that if a young person experiences an unhealthy or abusive relationship, they are much more likely to seek out the same type of relationships as adults.

Resources, licensed counseling sessions and promotion of healthy relationships are services C.A.R.E. of Atchison County provides to those who find themselves in these situations. C.A.R.E. advocates want our young people to be safe, protected and empowered to live lives free of violence and full of dignity and respect.

Whether the violence occurs in person or on-line in some capacity from the various platforms, it is just that, violence!

Talk with anyone who falls into the dating criteria to establish boundaries that are healthy and safe, give them the confidence to speak up when that boundary is crossed.
