February 18, 1949
• Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hargus have purchased the residence property at 405 Pine Street from Ray Simpson. The home was owned by the John Walker family for many years before they moved to St. Joseph.
• The 953 acres of land of the Joseph Whalen estate, lying north of Highway 275 between Tarkio and Rock Port, brought a total of $112,699.78 when sold at a partition land auction Saturday afternoon at the courthouse. The land was sold in seven tracts. They were sold to: W.C. Tiemeyer; Everett W. Howell, L. Wayne Howell, and John C. Howell; Lewis Noellsch; Carl Steinhouse; Carl Walters; and Henry Warneke.
• Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wood observed their golden anniversary with a family gathering at their house in Tarkio Sunday. The Woods have been residents of Atchison County since their marriage February 15, 1899.
• The Tarkio High School Indians grabbed the championship of the Tri-State Basketball Conference Tuesday night when they defeated Sidney, Iowa, 48-41.
• The famous Pulitzer Prize winning play “Our Town” will be performed at the Tarkio College Little Theatre March 10 and 11.
February 21, 1974
• Mike Kenagy and Julie Aeschliman were crowned king and queen of the 1974 Tarkio High School Basketball Homecoming February 9. Crownbearers were Lori Seymour and Johnna Wilcox.
• The mercury rose to 64 degrees on the 17th after a low of 20 on the 16th.
• The Midwest Amusement Association, Inc. is sponsoring an 8-ball pool tournament as well as a “Pinball Wizard Championship Tournament” assisted by the owners of various locations where the coin-operated pool tables and pinball machines are located. Nixon Brothers are the local sponsors.
• The Robert Lade Memorial Award presented annually to the most valuable football player was presented recently to Phil Cook, senior center and defensive end of the Tarkio College Owls. Lade was a professor of physical education and a coach at Tarkio College from 1956 until his death in 1973.
February 19, 1999
• A blood drive was held in Tarkio on Wednesday, February 10. There were 53 units of blood collected.
• Joy Johnson visited Mrs. Cox’s first grade class in Tarkio to talk about the newspaper. The students learned about careers in the business and looked at the Tarkio Avalanche newspaper.
• Living Faith Assembly of God Church (formerly Full Gospel Assembly of God) in Tarkio began its ministry on January 24, 1999. Its newly appointed pastor is Reverend Tony Didlo, son of Tom and Charlene Didlo of Tarkio. Tony is a 1988 graduate of Tarkio High School.
• The Tarkio R-I School District closed for two days due to 110 students out with illness.
• Tarkio High School senior Mike Tullis placed 1st in the 215 lb. weight class at sectionals to advance to state wrestling. Mike is the son of Richard and Debbie Tullis.
