February 25, 1949
• Pvt. Gerald P. Dunlap, son of Mrs. James A. Dunlap of Tarkio, was a recent graduate of the Tokyo branch of the United States Armed Forces Institute. Private Dunlap enlisted in the regular Army March 3, 1948, after completing three years of high school and working at the Hy-Klas grocery store.
• The Coffee Shop at the Walnut Inn will reopen Tuesday under the management of Mrs. Maxine Bell and Mrs. Goldia Wells. Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Wells previously managed the restaurant during the war years. Mrs. Will Whited, their mother, will be associated with them as cook with Mrs. Dollie Lester as the other cook.
• Funeral services were held Saturday at Davis Funeral Home for Oscar Benton Morton, 74. Prior to his illness, Mr. Morton worked with his son, Lester, in handling mail and express in Tarkio. Mr. Morton had been a resident in Tarkio since 1904 and was a Spanish-American War veteran.
• On display this weekend in the window of the H.D. Cunningham office on Main Street are more than 50 girls’ dresses. Some will be sent to children at Mercy Hospital in Kansas City and others will be provided to local families who are victims of floods, fires, and other emergencies.
February 28, 1974
• Cubmaster C. L. McAdams was presented with a plaque in appreciation of his 14 years of service as local cubmaster. He was recognized at the Blue and Gold Banquet held Monday night.
• The Beta Sigma Phi Sorority presented a check for $521.35 to the elementary school for the purchase of gymnastics equipment. The money was raised at the tour of homes.
• A donkey basketball tournament will be held at Schechter Gym March 6. The first game will be the Tarkio High School teachers vs. the Rock Port High School teachers. The next game will be the Tarkio College Faculty (Eldon’s Army) vs. the Coed Intellects. The winners of these two games will then play each other, all while on the backs of donkeys.
• The Tarkio Firemen’s Ball will be held Friday, March 8, at the Tarkio Community Building. Music will be supplied by the Silvey Brothers.
February 25, 1999
• A heavy snowfall fell on Tarkio and the surrounding areas Monday, February 22, forcing an early dismissal at Tarkio R-I and no school on Tuesday.
• Mr. Jeff Nichols, Executive Director at Clarinda Academy in Clarinda, Iowa, has been appointed interim executive director at Tarkio Academy. Orma Meier, M.S., L.P.C., of Tarkio has recently been appointed supervisor of the Tarkio Academy Clinical Services Department.
• Listed for sale are the Tarkio Avalanche building on 3rd Street in Tarkio and the apartment building next to it. The newspaper will be moving to a new building on Main Street. The screen printing shop on Main Street is also for sale and inventory will be moved to the new newspaper building.
• The Atchison County Spelling Bee was held Thursday, February 18, in Tarkio. Winners were Justin Gish of Tarkio (1st place) and Trent Phelps of Tarkio (2nd place).
