March 4, 1949
• A group of Westboro High School students enjoyed an evening at the Tarkio skating rink last Tuesday.
• A feature of one of the closing Owl basketball games was the halftime weightlifting exhibition given by Wayne Smith and Remel Gray. The two college football players practice weightlifting as a hobby during winter.
• Thirty friends and neighbors gathered at the Ed Mayes home Thursday night for a farewell party. The evening was spent playing cards and games. The Mayes family bought a farm near Lamar.
• Work is scheduled to start today on completion of the new locker plant at Third and Broad streets in Tarkio. The plant, to be known as the Tarkio Frozen Food Bank, will be operated by the Tarkio Packing Company. The north room will be used for the locker room with a wholesale meat counter for locker owners, a stock of groceries, and frozen foods. A total of 490 lockers will be installed.
• Thirty-five athletes turned out Tuesday for track at Tarkio College. On the roster is: Chris Stauch, conference record holder in the javelin throw who won honors at the AAU and Drake Relays; Art Murphy, high and broad jumper; and Dick Frazee, a good distance man.
March 7, 1974
• Jeffrey Alsup, who went into the U.S. Navy November 20, 1973, graduated from Boot Camp February 8, 1974. He will be stationed at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, for 16 weeks training as Hospital Man.
• A new installation at the First National Bank in Tarkio is a surveillance system that photographs customers as they are being waited upon at the teller windows. A camera records constantly during banking hours. A would-be robber could shoot the camera, but there would still be a record of his picture on a tape which is secluded in the bank building.
• The Director of Missouri Division of Highway Safety reminded Missouri motorists that they should be very careful when taking advantage of the new “Right Turn on Red” traffic law that went into effect February 28.
• Charles Brickhouse, a senior art major, exhibited his independent study show “Geometric Variations” in the Tarkio College cafeteria. The color pencil and pen drawings emphasized art without subject matter.
• The Tarkio College Owls, champions of the Heart of America Athletic Conference, fell victim to the Missouri Western College Griffins in a District 16 N.A.I.A. playoff game Monday. The Owls fell 69-85.
March 4, 1999
• Three Tarkio youth competed in a youth wrestling tournament in Rock Port. Michael Ohrt finished third, Derek Hawkins finished fourth, and Tyler Romines finished second.
• The Tarkio High School basketball teams went undefeated in conference play, both having 8-0 records. Going back 20 years in Tarkio High School basketball records, a feat such as this was not found.
• The Tarkio FFA Chapter received a $100 donation from Dave Maher of Security Corporation of Iowa.
