March 4, 1949

• Funeral services for James Max Miller, who died in the service of his country in the Battle for Cassino in Italy, were held at the Fairfax Methodist Church February 28. Born near Langdon, Missouri, November 9, 1921, he and his family moved to Fairfax when he was two. Max took part in several major battles in northern Africa, helped wrest Sicily from the enemy, and was among the first American soldiers to land in Naples, Italy.

• Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Stewart were surprised Sunday afternoon when a man knocked at their door and told them he had just set his plane down in a clover field southeast of their home and would like to know where he was and how he could get to Kansas City. The man and his wife had set out for Kansas City from Mason City, Iowa, but their compass had gone wrong. They gassed up at the Tarkio airport and after a rather hazardous takeoff, they got into the air again and were on their way.

• Melvin Bros. Oil Company will have their automobile display all ready for the reception of the new 1949 DeSoto Saturday.

• Work on the Fairfax Community Hospital may be temporarily suspended next week until more funds are raised. It is estimated that an additional $20,000 will be needed to complete the building and probably $25,000 will be needed to equip it.

• Fred Dunkle has a hen that ought to get some sort of national award for what is no doubt an egg that should show all other hens what is possible in egg production. This egg is as large as four ordinary eggs put together and measures nine and one-half inches in circumference and weighs six ounces. The egg is on display in the Forum’s window.

March 7, 1974

• Weekly deals at Hunter’s Hy-Klas food store in Fairfax include: Coca Cola, an 8 pack of 16 ounce bottles, 89¢; U.S. Choice sirloin steak, $1.49 per pound; Hy-Klas Budget bread, 3 16 ounce loaves for 89¢; golden ripe bananas, 10¢ per pound; and Swanson pot pies, 3 pies for only 89¢.

• Fairfax bowlers walked off with two first place trophies in the annual Tarkio Women’s Bowling handicap tournament at Tarkio Lanes. Mrs. Jack Graves was the winner of the singles event with a 628 handicap score.

• The Book Nook moved to Schooler Furniture Store the first of the week. They have been occupying half of the Fairfax Library building.

• The Fairfax Bulldogs won the Regional Tournament Saturday, defeating North Andrew 63-53. Fairfax players’ scores include: Mark Hawkins, 22; Rick Martin and Gregg Smith, 14 each; Richard Payton, 9; and Dave Sly and Hal Kottman, 2 each.

March 4, 1999

• The FFA Chapter received a $100 donation from Dave Maher of Security Corporation of Iowa.

• Sarah Johnson, a fifth grade student at Fairfax, shared experiences from her trip to Jamaica with her mother, Dina Johnson, and Dr. Wallace and Diane Carpenter. Dr. Carpenter works at a medical clinic in Falmouth.  Besides sightseeing and clinic work, the group delivered clothes and medicine to people Dr. Carpenter cares for at the clinic.

• PFC Eric A. Bradfield graduated with honors at a ceremony from One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on Friday, February 26. He received a medal for Excellence in Armor. PFC Bradfield left Fort Knox on February 28 for the Army reception center in Frankfurt, Germany.

• The Fairfax FFA members held a petting zoo for students on February 26. There were dogs, ducks, pigeons, a lamb, a goat, and a bunny at the zoo.
