March 11, 1949

•  A new Farmall-M tractor stolen from the Moore and Glenn Implement lot on Highway 59 in Tarkio has not been recovered.

• Mr. and Mrs. Benny Carrow are new caretakers of the Tarkio Community Park. Mr. Carrow is a student at Tarkio College.

• Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Davis Funeral Home for Henry Balle, Sr., 69. Mr. Balle was one of the early settlers of Tarkio. He was born in Hamburg, Iowa, July 4, 1879, and he and his family moved to Center Point and in the early century, to Tarkio. He was best known as a barber, although he was associated with a garage as well.

• March weather ran the gamut from spring to winter in Atchison County this week. Last Friday afternoon saw a high of 65 degrees and as the days passed, the area was hit by a rain storm, sleet storm, and snow storm, and buffeted by strong winds. The temperature had dropped to 22 degrees by the following Thursday.

March 14, 1974

• Time and space notwithstanding, reminders of Tarkio and Tarkio people turn up in all parts of the world. Mrs. Ralph McKinley of San Diego, California, formerly of Tarkio, sent in a story about one such reminder. Her son, William, recently purchased a house. It was an estate property but the former owners are unknown. However, her grandson, being a book reader, opened an old book and out fell a pamphlet highlighting the play production of “Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch” at the auditorium in Tarkio, Missouri, Friday, November 12, 1909. One of the actresses was Edith A. Gibbs, who was Mrs. McKinley’s eighth grade teacher in the Tarkio public school in 1913.

• The Tarkio College Owls won the Heart of America Indoor Track Championship at Lamoni, Iowa, last Saturday. This is the third Heart of America Conference Championship won during the 1973-74 school year.

• Mrs. Joy Polson was honored at a dinner Sunday in observance of Girl Scout Week. Mrs. Polson has been active with the Girl Scouts in Atchison County for a long time. She was presented with a Girl Scout Presentation Tray.

March 11, 1999

• The Tarkio Lady Indians won the District Basketball Tournament, defeating the Fairfax Lady Bulldogs 50-40 in the title game. The victory improved the girls’ overall record to 27-0.

• Barbies are on display at Farmers & Valley Bank in Tarkio in celebration of Barbie’s 40th birthday March 9.

• K-9 Deputy Gretchen is back in the county following three months of intensive training. In addition to being qualified for narcotics detection and passive tracking, Gretchen is now certified to perform officer protection, assisting in apprehending criminals, building searches, and evidence collection.

• The Missouri Housing Development Commission approved funding for 42 affordable housing developments to include one in Tarkio. Tarkio’s will be a 28-unit family development project on the far east end of Birch Street on what is known as the Chitwood property.
