Guests who brought seeds to exchange traded with others. The library also had seeds for people to take. There are still seeds left over for anyone who wants to come to the library and pick some seeds up for themselves.

The Atchison County Library hosted a “seed exchange” event at the Rock Port branch on Tuesday, March 5. Mandy Herron, owner of local business Flower and Forged Farms, gave the group a presentation on seed blocking. She shared her knowledge about the best time of year to start planting popular vegetables and flowers. Guests discussed different types of flowers and vegetables and gave each other tips and tricks about planting.

The library used this event to present six new gardening books: The Cottage Garden by Claus Dalby, The Layered Garden: Design Lessons for Year-Round Beauty from Brandywine Cottage by David L. Culp, The Cutting Garden: Growing and Arranging Garden Flowers by Sarah Raven, Dreamscapes: Inspiration and Beauty in Gardens Near and Far by Claire Takacs, Garden Style: A Book of Ideas by Heidi Howcroft and Marianne Majerus, The Complete Gardener: A Practical, Imaginative Guide to Every Aspect of Gardening by Monty Don, and Growing Flowers: Everything You Need to Know About Planting, Tending, Harvesting and Arranging Beautiful Blooms (Flower Gardening for Beginners) by Niki Irving.

The leftover seeds will be turned into a “Seed Library” for any patrons who would like to take seeds home with them.
