In writing this week for “On the Spiritual Side” I want to pass on some teaching from the Gospel of John. This is from new Bible study since the month of January at the Rock Port Baptist Church.

Often in our confusing world we may find trouble in sorting out good vs. bad, truth vs. error, love vs. hate, and what is heavenly vs. what is earthly. John helps us to see Jesus for who He was, is, and is still to come (past, present, future). Looking to Jesus will enable to experience a true spiritual, inner person that makes a difference in how we live, and through salvation experience eternal life in heaven after this earthly life is finished.

First, Jesus is of heavenly origin. John 3:31 states: “The One who comes from heaven is above all.” This helps us discern that in Jesus we find God with us, not merely a good guy, a helpful idea, or a good teacher but the Son of God, the Son of man, and the only Christ/Messiah (Anointed One). God brings heaven to earth, and life has purpose and destiny in all things.

Second, Jesus gives us divine insight. We begin to read the newspaper not merely to gain information such as remembering history or to know about current events (both of which are good things to do), but to experience God as we live life, knowing He has a hand of grace in all things. John 3:34 states: “The One whom God sent speaks God’s words, since He gives the Spirit without measure.” Although Jesus is not physically present on earth, those who believe in Him will experience a full measure of His Spirit for any and all life circumstances. This not only reassures us in trouble but gives us a better chance for clear thinking and good behavior.

Third and final, Jesus reigns with sovereign authority. John 3:35 states: “The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hands.” This leaves us with confidence that Jesus is not only our Savior but an absolute Lord who will work for us on our behalf. The next verse 36 tells us that two kinds of people exist in the world: those who believe in Jesus and those who do not.

Therefore in conclusion, the responsibility for each of us is to BELIEVE in Jesus. There is both a promise and a warning here, and while Jesus has authority, and there is still time, we respond with obedience.
