April 22, 1949
• Members of the local Boy Scout Troop, under the direction of Scoutmaster Kenneth Weedin, have drilled holes in the cement walks in front of business buildings for 38 flag poles to hold the flags that have been sold by the American Legion.
• Glenda Sue Dudley suffered a broken leg and a mashed foot Wednesday afternoon at Irish Grove School. The bus had just pulled up to load the students to take them home when Glenda was either pushed or fell so that her foot and leg were under the path of the rear wheel of the bus and when the bus stopped the wheel was on her foot. The bus driver then drove the bus off her foot. X-rays taken the next day showed a broken leg.
• Fire destroyed the nine-room modern farm home of Robert Barrett three and three-fourths miles west of Skidmore. The origin of the fire is unknown. Most of the household goods and clothing were saved.
• Two inches of snow fell here April 14 and left ice and cold weather in its wake Friday and Saturday mornings.
• Bob L. Bilby is advertising Quarter Horse Stallion “Bob’s Baldy” American Quarter Horse Association No. 14,453 at service for $50 (with a return privilege) at ranch southeast of Fairfax.
• At Fair Theatre in Fairfax: Jean Arthur and William Holden in “Arizona” and Judy Garland and Gene Kelley in “The Pirate.”

• Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pearce of Fairfax celebrated their 50th anniversary at a dinner held in their honor April 23 at The Walnut Inn in Tarkio. Mr. Pearce is a retired postmaster and Mrs. Pearce retired from a postal clerk’s position in the local office a few years ago.
• For the first time in 30 years, a Boy Scout Court of Honor will be held in Fairfax to award the Eagle Scout badge to a local scout. Donnie Calfee has achieved the honor under the leadership of Scoutmaster Lewis Vaught.
• Steve Irvine and Ted Simmons were in Omaha Sunday competing in the pinball wizard and pool shark tournaments held at the Hilton Hotel. Both fellows brought home cash prizes.
• Lorie’s Beauty Shop is now open for business next door to the Dairy Diner.

• Community Hospital, Fairfax, received a donation of three sweatsuits from the Maryville, Missouri, Chapter of Missouri Business & Professional Women. These pieces of clothing are for women seen in the hospital’s emergency room as victims of rape and abuse or patients in need of clothing upon their departure.
• New Fairfax Board of Aldermen Lane Seymour and Dennis Athen were sworn in at the meeting held April 14 at City Hall.
• Atchison County’s D.A.R.E. Graduation was held Friday, April 16, at Tarkio. Eighty-five Atchison County sixth graders earned their certificates. Devon Sons was the essay winner from Fairfax. Fairfax Role Models were Tiffany Taylor and Jessica Ray.
• The Community Hospital Auxiliary presented Larry Goodloe, hospital administrator, with its “Celebrating the 50th Anniversary” cookbook created in observance of Community Hospital’s 50th anniversary. The cookbook contains nearly 600 tried and true recipes from auxilians, hospital employees and former employees, patients, and friends.
• Dona and Rick Kemerling found a number of morel mushrooms growing in their yard Saturday.
