April 22, 1949
• Two new businesses are opening in Tarkio during the month of April. A new photographic studio is scheduled for opening in the Harvey building adjoining the First National Bank building on Main Street. It will be known as the Sandberg Studio, run by Mr. and Mrs. Pete J. Sandberg. G.F. Shisler is operating the basement barber shop at Fourth and Main streets. He purchased the shop of the late Henry Balle.
• Baseball under the lights in Tarkio by May 30 was assured this week with the signing of a contract for the installation of a $7,500 lighting system. The field will be lit by 156,000 watts from 52 lights, each having two 1,500 watt bulbs.
• Military services will be held at Home Cemetery Sunday for Staff Sgt. Clarence Edward Campbell, who was killed in action in France October 8, 1944. Sgt. Campbell was 27 at the time of his death and was serving under Gen. George S. Patton in the Third Army, 80th Division. Sgt. Campbell’s brother, Cossie Lee Campbell, was killed in action 18 days before him while serving in the medical corps in France.
• Mrs. G. A. Johnson and Mrs. Ina Bell have returned from a trip to the east during which they visited 12 states. The motor trip was made especially to attend the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. They attended sessions of the House of Representatives and the Senate and ate in the Senate dining room and rode on the Senate subway. In New York City, they attended a broadcast of the Quiz Kids and toured other points of interest.
April 25, 1974
• The Indians sloshed through the fifth annual Bearcat Relays to win first place as a team and first in the mile relay, and brought home 22 medals.
• John Ferola, Artistic Director of the Mule Barn Summer Theatre, is in the final phases of casting for the summer program. Ferola and the Barn’s returning musical director, Jim Elsberry, have been auditioning actors, actresses, musicians, and technical personnel for the past six weeks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Omaha, Nebraska, Columbus, Ohio, and New York City, New York, as well as in Tarkio. Over 300 prospective members of the company traveled across the nation to show off their talents.
• Tarkio College President Eldon Breazier surprised his wife with a 30th wedding anniversary party at the manse in Tarkio.
• The students of Tarkio and Rock Port junior high have recently been entertained by each other. On Monday, April 19, the Rock Port band and some other students came to Tarkio and presented a program of playing and singing. On Thursday the 18th, the Tarkio students traveled to Rock Port for a similar performance.
April 22, 1999
• Tarkio hosted the Northwest Missouri 5th & 6th Grade Honor Choir and Junior High All-District Choir April 17. There were 311 students from 21 schools participating.
• U.S. Senator John Ashcroft met with senior citizens in Atchison County on Friday, April 16, to discuss social security issues.
• David Nasser spoke to Tarkio R-I and Tarkio Academy students April 19. At the age of nine, David and his family were caught in the middle of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and fled for their lives to the U.S. Finding asylum in the states, David and his family learned first hand the consequences of hate and prejudice and David turned to drugs and alcohol to fill the void. After turning his life around, David now speaks to 200,000 students across the nation every year.
