• Showing at the Paramount Theatre: “Shep Comes Home,” “The Pale Face,” “Flying Tigers,” and “Fighting Sea Bees.”
• Paul Basford of Maryville started work in Atchison County Wednesday in taking of a business census as authorized by the U.S. Department of Commerce census bureau. He will take a census of all retail and service establishments.
• Those attractive and well-lettered colored posters which were used effectively in advertising the Legion minstrel show were not the work of a commercial studio, but were lettered and illustrated by Perry Hutson, manager of Paramount Theatre. Hutson is an artist with the brush.
• Six sows and 40 pigs perished in a brooder shed fire at the Melvin Krutz place not far north of Corning, Missouri, early Sunday morning. The fire apparently started from a brooder stove. The sows and pigs belonged to B.W. Naumann, Jr., who lives on the Krutz farm.
April 25, 1974
• A reward of $1,000 is being offered by the North Nishnabotna Drainage District for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons responsible for the burning of the pump and pump house on the levee immediately north of the east end of the Brownville Bridge.
• Greenley’s Market advertised the following specials: frying chickens, 39¢ per pound; Washington Red Delicious apples, 10 for 89¢; California navel oranges, 10 for 79¢; Maxwell House coffee, 1 lb. can, 97¢; and Shurfine salad dressing, quart jar, 69¢.
• Missouri Beef Packers, Phelps City, will be laying off approximately 90 employees on the fabricating side for one week while they recover the floors and do other repair jobs.
• A new club has formed at Rock Port called the Optimist International. The club is known as “The Friend of Youth” and the purpose of the local club is to carry out projects to help the youth of the community.

• Rock Port Elementary students participated in St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Math-A-Thon, raising a total of $2,433.69. Trey Garst won a boom box for raising the most money.
• Tad Gebhards, in his senior season at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, became the school’s all-time winningest pitcher, breaking the 16 year-old record for career wins. This season, Tad has a 7-0 record with a save and a 1.93 ERA. The team is ranked 9th in the nation with a 30-3 record.
• Rock Port coach Del Stoltenberg has been named the Missouri State Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Coach of the Year. Del’s teams have competed in 139 meets, winning 95 and losing 44, and capturing seven conference championships, seven district titles, one state runner-up, and five state championships.
• Eighty-five Atchison County sixth graders received their D.A.R.E. graduation certificates April 16, at a ceremony held at Tarkio High School. D.A.R.E. Role Models were: Fairfax – Jessica Ray and Tiffany Taylor; Rock Port – Brock Bastow, Charlie Clodfelter, and Chris Gebhards; and Tarkio – Jamie Johnson, Andrea Murphy, and Mike Tullis.
