• Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian Church on Saturday afternoon for Dr. Clifton Michael Waugh, 73, who passed away in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Waugh graduated from Tarkio College in 1899 and Rush Medical School in 1902. Dr. Waugh was a family medical physician who “the hour of the night was never too late nor the mud or snow too deep for him to come to any home, regardless of the social or economical status of that home.” He married his classmate, Mamie McMaster, in 1904.
• The Tarkio High School all school play “Anne of Green Gables” will be performed in the high school auditorium. Anne will be played by Nancy Browning, Matthew Cuthbert is played by Lloyd Brown, Marilla Cuthbert is played by Biff Collins, bosom friend Diana Barry is played by Marym Croy, and Gilbert Blythe, the wealthiest boy in the community, will be played by Marvin Lane.
• Tarkio’s newest business property, the Tarkio Locker Company, located at Third and Broad street, is nearing completion. This is a $65,000 project with the owner and operator being J.N.M. Youel of Fairfax.
• The mercury climbed to a high of 88 Monday, the warmest April 25 in Tarkio on record. This represented a 52 degree jump from the week’s minimum of 36 degrees two days prior.
• Miss Minnie M. Hess, longtime resident of Tarkio, will observe her 90th birthday at her home at 212 N. 7th Street. Minnie was born May 1, 1869, and the Hess family moved to Atchison County in 1873.

• The Atchison County Sheriff’s Department and Tom Behrendsen of the State Fire Marshal’s office are making an extensive investigation into several fires that have occurred throughout the county over the past several months. Mr. Behrendsen is an expert in arson investigation.
• Tarkio College will sponsor an exhibition and sale of original graphic art by contemporary and old master artists, including original etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts by Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Dali, Goya, Renoir, Kollwitz, and others. Prices start at $5 with the majority priced under $100.
• This weekend will mark a half century of business for Evan Evans, Druggist. An announcement in a 1924 issue of the Avalanche relates that Mr. E.J. Evans purchased the interest of Mr. B.O. Dobler in the firm of Johnson and Dobler and the firm name was changed to Johnson and Evans. Mr. Evans attended school in Maryville and received pharmacy training at the Brunswick School. He is still active in Evans Drug Co. and works part-time.

• Jesse Bolin of Tarkio harvested a 24 3/4 pound turkey Tuesday, April 20, during the first week of spring turkey season. The bird had a 10 1/2 inch beard and 1” spurs.
• The Tarkio Boy Scouts have set up recycling bins at three local businesses in Tarkio.
• Submitted by Leland Crapson: “In the March 29, 1999, issue of Time Magazine, there are articles about the 100 greatest and most influential minds of the 20th century. Listed in the science area is Wallace Hume Carothers, the inventer of nylon. Dr. Carothers came to Tarkio College as a student in 1915 and graduated summa cum laude in 1920 with a major in chemistry. When the Professor of Chemistry left in 1917, Carothers taught the chemistry classes and became the college instructor while still a student. He guided four other chemistry majors through their studies and all went on to earn graduate degrees. One of these four was Dr. Leonard Hashe, who developed the process for use of dry ice and was one of the chemists who helped develop the use of plastics.”
