• Twenty-eight seniors will receive their diplomas at the 54th commencement of Fairfax High School which will be held at the high school auditorium Wednesday evening, May 11. Rev. Noel T. Adams, WWII chaplain and current superintendent of Fortescue, Missouri, schools, will be the commencement speaker.
• Former Fairfax resident T.J. Atwood just turned 93. He taught school here in the late 1800’s, then went west where he founded Sultan, Washington, in February 1889. He was Sultan’s first settler, taught school there, ran a pharmacy, was the town’s first marshal, and served as its postmaster.
• Tuesday brought the highest temperature of the year here with the mercury climbing to 89 degrees in mid-afternoon. The weather was even warmer to the west and north where Omaha, Nebraska, reported a temperature of 92.
• General Electric X-ray equipment has been purchased for the Fairfax Community Hospital. The cost of the equipment is approximately $5,400, which includes installation.
• A 14-month-old toddler died Friday afternoon of last week. The family had gone to a track meet and left the youngster with a neighbor. The baby got a hold of a small container of high test gasoline and swallowed a small quantity. Although his stomach was pumped, some of the fluid had reached his lungs.
• At a session of Atchison County Court Wednesday, the five banks in Atchison County were designated as depositories for the county funds. They are: The Exchange Bank in Fairfax; First National Bank and Farmers & Valley Bank in Tarkio; and Citizens Bank and the Bank of Atchison County in Rock Port.

• Specials at Hunter’s Hy-Klas Food Store: Dad’s root beer, three 32 oz. bottles, $1; Pringles potato chips, twin package for only 69¢; and Jif’s smooth or crunchy peanut butter, 18 oz. jar for 79¢.
• Brilliant color photos of Fairfax R-3 classes grades one through six are available at the Fairfax Forum office. Limited supply of 5×7 inches for $2.
• Fairfax Prom Queen was Nita Harmes and King was Wesley Windhorst.
• Twenty women have been accepted for the 1974-75 class of the School of Practical Nursing at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. Those from this area include: Karen Simmons, Fairfax; Sarah Bolin, Mary Hulett, and Jane Morgan, Tarkio; and Theresa Whelan, Watson.

• The Fairfax All-School Play “Medium Rare” was performed Saturday and Sunday, May 1 and 2, in the Fairfax High School Gym.
• Fairfax sixth grade student John Gilbert placed second in the Mind Your Own Business Contest held in Maryville April 27. Participants were required to think of an interesting and unique product or service and write a business plan. John’s idea was a kitchen cape.
• Fairfax R-3 is one of 84 public school districts across the state that have been awarded start-up grants to expand preschool services for three and four year olds. The preschool will be located in the Rogers Pharmacy building in Fairfax that was donated by Melvin Rogers.
• Michael Kerr of Fairfax showed off some big mushrooms he found on Sunday, May 2. The biggest one measured 11 inches tall and 10 1/2 inches around.
