• The community lost one of its most ardent workers in Boy Scout activities when H.H. “Skipper” Cribbs passed away April 27. A native of Mobile, Alabama, he became acquainted with Rock Port while traveling with a shoe company.
• Rock Port High School was represented by a group of girls in the state music festival held last weekend at Columbia. The girls placed as follows: Nancy Luhrs, 1 in high voice; Wilma Krutz, 1 in low voice; and Mina Alice Matkin, 3 in high voice. The girls’ sextet, made up of Ramona Fawcett, Barbara Smith, Wilma Krutz, Delores Thompson, Mina Matkin, and Nancy Luhrs, ranked 1.
• The Rock Port American Legion minstrel show, which was given in the Fairfax high school auditorium as a benefit for the Fairfax community hospital, was a hit with the audience.
• Chamberlain & Son Greenhouse and Studio advertised Mother’s Day corsages, cut flowers, and potted plants for “the Best Girl of All.”
May 2, 1974
• Spring showers followed by sunny days brought up many morels with mushroom hunters trailing close behind. Leo Erdman, Langdon, found a cluster of five mushrooms weighing approximately one-half of a pound near the Missouri River.
• Rock Port R-II School will have 35 teachers returning and 11 leaving the teaching staff. The school is looking for 10 new teachers to fill the vacant spots.
• Gary L. Bogenreif, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary G. Bogenreif, Rock Port, has received a Naval ROTC college scholarship. Only 1,500 out of 23,000 seniors throughout the United States were selected as recipients.
• The piano pupils of Mrs. May Curnutt will present two recitals at the Rock Port Methodist Church Sunday, May 5.
• The Hy-Klas Rock Port Market advertised specials to help you “Balance Your Budget.” They included: chuck steak, 59¢ per pound; eggs, 49¢ per dozen; cottage cheese, 89¢ for a 12-ounce carton; and fruit cocktail, two 15-ounce tins for 69¢.
• The Rock Port R-2 two-mile relay team, made up of Randy Alley, Mick Wilczek, Gary Bogenreif, and Dan Stanton, won the first place trophy in the 275 Conference Track Meet held April 23 in Rock Port. They were the only team from the Rock Port track squad that won a trophy.
April 29, 1999
• The long-time tank spout at the Rock Port Board of Public Works has been removed. This was installed prior to the Rural Water District and has declined in use over the years.
• Amber Whitehill and Joe Bremer have been chosen as the Fourth Quarter Good School Citizens.
• New officers for the 1999-2000 year of the National Honor Society are: Kate Griffin, president; Ryan Hance, vice-president; Amy Zimmerman, secretary; Taya Moore, treasurer; and Jamie Schmielau, Student Council representative.
• The Rock Port junior high and high school track teams competed in the Panther Relays Saturday, April 24. Both high school teams finished in first place. The girls scored 103 points and the boys scored 136 points.
