• Final rites were held Thursday at the American Legion Memorial Building in Tarkio for Pfc. Leslie Erwin Chancey, who was killed in action on Saipan, Marianas Islands, July 12, 1944, within 13 days of his 20th birthday. He was serving with the Marines. Pfc. Chancey was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with Gold Star, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
• After 22 years of handling mail and express contracts in Tarkio, Lester Morton has given up the business. Bob Gerdes has taken over the mail, express, and freight contracts, and will handle all three in Tarkio.
• Rogers Schoneman was Tarkio High School’s only competitor in the Class C Missouri Interscholastic Track and Field Meet at the University of Missouri, Columbia, on Saturday. He took second in the high jump.
• Tarkio experienced five days of rain this week, starting with a trace of precipitation last Thursday and Friday and continuing with rain Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The week’s maximum temperature was 87 degrees and the low was 43.
• Showing at The Tarkio Theatre: “Meet Frankenstein” with Abbott and Costello, “One Sunday Afternoon” with Dennis Morgan and Janis Paige, “Hollywood Barn Dance” with Ernest Tubb, and “Saps At Sea” with Laurel and Hardy.

• The scene was lively at Torrey Pines in Tarkio Sunday afternoon and evening as the son of Conway Twitty and the T-Birds provided an impromptu and informal concert in the parking lot. The son of the noted longtime entertainer of country western music was in the area to perform in Shenandoah, Iowa, and came to Tarkio on the spur of the moment.
• The sixth grade students at Tarkio R-I have been studying the heart in health class. Mrs. Elaine Golden, laboratory technician from Community Hospital in Fairfax, visited the students and talked to them about different blood types, then did a blood-type on most of them.
• One hundred twenty-one seniors received the Bachelor of Arts degree at the 88th Commencement of Tarkio College May 12. Dr. Lloyd J. Averill, president of the Kansas City Regional Council for Higher Education, was the commencement speaker.
• Crystal Clement, Director of Alumni Relations of Tarkio College, was honored by the Alumni Association for her 25 years of service in this position. They presented her with a purse for the purchase of a new automobile, the loving response of the alumni of the college to the “Crystal Clement Car Fund” initiated by the Alumni Association Board of Directors. She was also presented with a plaque commemorating her being the first person elected as an Honorary Alumnus of Tarkio College.

• Tarkio High School Prom Queen and King are Mendy Martin and John Stockstill.
• Tarkio first graders celebrated western day May 7 with friends and family. The kids square danced, played games, and enjoyed horse rides.
• Members of the Farmer City 4-H Club planted flowers along Main Street in Tarkio recently.
• The THS Outstanding Senior Musician is Noelle Jagger and the Outstanding Senior Athletes are Jamie Johnson and John Stockstill.
• Thirty-three seniors at Tarkio High School will receive their diplomas in a graduation ceremony this Sunday, May 16. The speaker is Dr. Gary Howren, Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at Northwest Missouri State University.
