STATE CHAMPIONS
Tommi Martin finishes out her high school career as the state champion in the javelin with a throw of 41.64m or 136’7”.
Rylee Jenkins set the tone with her first throw in the discus setting a new state record with a throw of 44.58 meter or 146’3”.
Lizzie Schlueter ran a 15.66 in the 100 meter hurdles that literally was a photo finish and a new personal record.
Ella Meyerkorth set a new state and school record in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 44.82.
Lady Blue Jays win state track meet
The MSHSAA Class 1 State Championship Track Meet was held Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, in Jefferson City, Missouri.
The Rock Port Lady Blue Jays came home with a state champion title following the two day meet. It was a big weekend for the Lady Blue Jays as they scored 73 total team points, topping the previous top score of 58 scored by the Lady Jays in 2008.
The Lady Jays also set two new state records. Rylee Jenkins’ first discus throw was 44.58 meters or 146’3”. This was a new state record, but not Rylee’s best throw of the season. Rylee ended her high school track career as a three-time state champion in the discus. Ella Meyerkorth also set a state record and a new school record in the 300 meter hurdles, winning with a time of 44.82.
Two athletes beat or tied school records at the state competition, as well. Avery Meyerkorth had a jump of 5.14 meters or 16’10.5” in the long jump, beating Patti Gubser’s record of 16’8.5” set in 1995. She also set a new school record in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:21.03, beating the record of 2:22.06 set by Amanda Gray in 2005. Landrey Kelly tied the school record in the pole vault with a vault of 2.62 meters or 8’7”.
Rock Port boys also had a good showing with Dylan Lair taking 5th in the 100 meter dash and the 4×100 meter relay team taking 6th place.

Placing second in the 800 meter run, Avery Meyerkorth ran a 2:21.03. This was also a new school record, beating Amanda Gray’s record of 2:22.06. She also jumped 16’10.25” to place 4th and set a new school record, beating Patti Gubser’s record by 2”.
Norah Watkins got out early in the 3200 meter run and placed third with a time of 12:20.20. She also ran the 1600 meter run, placing 7th with a time of 5:37.51. Norah ran with the 4×400 meter relay team on Friday, and with the 4×800 meter relay team that placed second.
Clearing the last hurdle, Ella Meyerkorth claims the title of state champion in the 300 meter hurdles. Ella also won second place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.76, and sixth in the javelin, with a throw of 36.30 meters or 119’1”.
Landrey Kelly placed sixth in the pole vault with a leap of 2.62 meters or 8’7”. This tied the school record.
Rock Port’s 4×800 meter placed second with a time of 10:10.87. Team members are Jacoby Driskell, Norah Watkins, Rylee Jenkins and Avery Meyerkorth.
Jacoby Driskell, Ella Meyerkorth, Rylee Jenkins, and Avery Meyerkorth placed third in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 4:15.09. Norah Watkins ran with the team that qualified in the preliminaries on Friday.

Dylan Lair ran a time of 11.28 and placed fifth in the 100 meter dash.
The Rock Port boys’ 4×100 meter relay team of Dylan Lair, Case Millsap, Corbyn Jakub, and Camden McEnaney placed sixth with a time of 45.92.
Corbyn Jakub, who ran the third leg of the 4×100 meter relay, hands off to Dylan Lair, who anchored the relay to a sixth place finish with a time of 45.92.
Malachi Skillen competed in both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs. Malachi finished 11th with a time of 4:55.91 in the 1600m and 9th in the 3200m run with a time of 10:57.03.
Lady Wolves take 2nd at state track meet
East Atchison was well represented at the MSHSAA Class 1 State Championship Track Meet as the girls came home with a second place team trophy. The Lady Wolves scored a total of 51 points.
Senior Tommi Martin led the way with 16 individual points, including a first place in the javelin and a third place finish in the 800 meter run (becoming a four-time state medalist in this event). She was also on the 4×800 meter relay team which placed third and the 4×400 meter relay team that placed second, for a total of 14 points.
Junior Lizzie Schlueter also had 16 individual points with a win and personal record in the 100 meter hurdles and a third place finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Lizzie was also on the 4×200 meter relay team that placed fourth and the 4×400 meter relay team that took second place for a total of 13 points.
The EA Wolves had one competitor, Collin Hedlund. Collin placed 4th in the discus with a throw of 44.07 meters or 144’7”. This was a new personal record for Collin.

The girls’ 100 meter hurdles was an exciting race to watch as the first three runners came into the last hurdle side by side. Lizzie Schlueter had a slight lead over Ella Meyerkorth, winning it by one-tenth of a second.

East Atchison placed second in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 4:11.41. EA moved from fourth place in the team standing to second with this finish. Relay members are Grace Oswald, Tommi Martin, Grace Caudill, and Lizzie Schlueter.
Placing third, the 4×800 meter relay team of Tommi Martin, Jayla Irvine, Bailey Wennihan, and Grace Oswald ran it in 10:12.15.
Collin Hedlund went to state in both the shot put and discus. Collin finished in 12th place in the shot, but 4th place in the discus with a personal best of 44.07 meters or 144’ 7”.
