June 10, 1949

• Striking during a torrential rain at dusk Wednesday evening of last week, a tornado hit south and east of Fairfax, traveled to the northeast and left a path of destruction a half-mile wide, killing one and injuring 17, and causing one million dollars in damages.

• In freak instances found after the storm: Bion Schooler’s Chevrolet truck traveled across the street to neighbor Vernon Gomel’s yard and Gomel’s Chevrolet car was in front of Schooler’s house. Three large trees were taken down as if they were merely straws, but a brooder house with young chicks that was located amongst the trees was completely undamaged and the chicks unharmed. A dresser in Bion Schooler’s home was split into halves and one portion of it was found in another room. An envelope from Bern, Kansas, was found by Austin White in the yard at Pine Hall Farm, which is around 56 miles from Bern. Mrs. Henry Viets’ gold wedding ring was found inside its case by Jack Fellows between his house and barn, three miles away. A bank statement and cancelled check on the Exchange Bank of Fairfax signed by Mrs. Martha Viets was found on a farm seven miles northwest of Bedford, Iowa. Thousands of people traveled to the area to see the storm damage that made international news headlines.

June 13, 1974

• Funeral services were held Saturday, June 8, for Mrs. Maude Elizabeth Davenport, 94-year-old Tarkio resident. A native of Atchison County, Maude was born near Fairfax January 30, 1880, to Thomas and Amelia Murphy Hoover. Mrs. Davenport was noted for her remarkable memory and few could relate the county history as she could. She lived her entire life in the county.

• Mr. and Mrs. David Graves of Fairfax announce the birth of their son, Lonnie David, born at 2:31 a.m. June 7 at Community Hospital. He weighed 6 pounds and 9 ounces.

• TheXi Lambda Beta June Yards of the Month are: Larry and Barb Zirfas, Charles and Helen Golden, Bill and Nancy VanGundy, and Eugene and Mildred Thomson.

• The Fairfax Kiwanis Club is working on another delivery of batteries to Exide Corporation (Schuykill Metals) in Forest City, Missouri. The Fairfax Kiwanis Club was recently recognized for giving the Iodine Deficiency Deficit Program more money than the other four clubs in its division combined.

• A wet and cool April had many farmers wondering if conditions were going to improve enough to allow them to get their crops in. However, nearly two weeks of good weather has allowed many area farmers to finish planting.

• The home of Ed and Carol Ball southeast of Fairfax was completely destroyed by fire early Tuesday, June 8. Ed and Carol were at home at the time of the fire, but escaped uninjured. The Fairfax Fire Department responded with 15 firemen and three trucks and the Mound City Fire Department aided them with eight firemen and two trucks.
