• Regular scheduled weather broadcasts are now being made from the local U.S. Airways Communications Station. The local weather reports, given every half hour directly from the station, are primarily designed for aviation interests, truckers, farmers, and fruit growers.
• The Tarkio public schools will open for their 64th year September 5. Two resignations during the past week have been filled. Miss Mary Irvine of Buckingham, Iowa, a graduate of Tarkio College, will teach high school science. Miss Marcha Sawyers of St. Joseph, Missouri, will be teaching first grade.
• A new course in driver education will be introduced this year at Westboro High School when the Westboro public schools reopen August 29. Faculty and staff numbering 17 will fill the high school and elementary positions.
• Final rites for Pfc. Harvey C. Hayes, who died in service May 18, 1944, will be held Sunday at the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio. Pfc. Hayes, who was 31 at the time of his death, was killed as a result of wounds received in action in the Pacific Theatre. He was the son of Mrs. Orville Wallace of Tarkio.
• Excellent television reception in Tarkio from both Omaha, Nebraska, and Kansas City, Missouri, stations was reported this week by local owners of television receivers. Television receivers have been installed at the Robert Martin home (where there is a 20 ft. tower but plans to install a 50 ft. one), the Dr. J.J. Riordan residence (who has a 38 ft. tower), and at the Tarkio Electric Co. (which has a 45 ft. tower).

• Curley’s, under the new management of Cherry Stevens, is opening September 1.
• Harold L. Poynter, O.D., H.L. Poynter, III, O.D., and Paul R. Poynter, O.D., have opened an office for optometric vision care in Tarkio. Dr. Harold Poynter has been in practice 26 years. His son, Dr. H.L. Poynter, has been in practice for five years. His other son, Dr. Paul Poynter, is a recent graduate from the Graduate School of Indiana University.
• The five remaining charter members of the Merrill Smith American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 32 of Westboro, Missouri, were honored with a certificate designating 42 years of continued membership at the August meeting. They are Mrs. Marian Tourtelotte, Mrs. Mabel Jackson, and Mrs. Pearl Green, Westboro; and Mrs. Ann Dunham and Emma Van Stavern, Tarkio, Missouri.
• The mercury rose to 93 degrees on the 26th after a low of 53 degrees on the 24th. There has been no precipitation.

• Stephanie and Michelle Sharp were pictured standing in front of their new playhouse. The playhouse was purchased from the ag students at Tarkio High School.
• First place winners of the championship flight of the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament were Ferd Ray, Heath Nuckolls, Roy McIntosh, and Wayne Davidson.
• Cheri Becerra, a bronze medalist in the Special Olympics Wheelchair Racing event, spoke to Tarkio Academy students during the closing ceremony of their own Summer Olympics.
• Ask Elsie Fae: “I love my new car and Mary Beth has let me drive it two times. When I told her to take my car, I didn’t mean ‘for keeps.’”
