The Blue Jays looked to keep their streak alive and move to 10 and 0 on the season as they took on the Stanberry Bulldogs Friday night. Stanberry came in to the contest with an 8 and 1 record, having only lost to Worth County.
From the opening kick-off the Bulldogs took control, taking it back 65 yards for a touchdown and the two point conversion was good.
Rock Port wasted no time in answering back with a big 50 yard run by running back Gavin Abbott taking the ball to the 10 yard line. Two plays later quarterback Jase Hughes would connect with tight end Ryan Dewhirst for a three yard touchdown pass. The PAT was no good.
On the next possession Rock Port was able to hold the Bulldogs and forced them to punt.
A couple of plays later Hughes was able to connect with receiver Caden Linthicum for a 37 yard pass, moving the ball to the Stanberry 10 yard line. The Bulldogs were able to hold the Jays and took over on downs. Eleven plays later Stanberry punched it in on a three yard run. The PAT was good, making the score 6-16. This would end the first quarter.
Hughes connected with Dewhirst on a 34 yard pass and touchdown run to start the second quarter. Abbott’s PAT was good, making the score 14-16.
Stanberry would score two more times before the Jays would answer on a one yard run by Gavin Abbott.
The Jays would kick an onside kick which was recovered by Joey Herron.
On the next play, a quarterback keeper, Jase Hughes would scramble 37 yards for the touchdown.
Stanberry would put another 8 points on the board before Hughes would hit Linthicum on a 52 yard pass. Hughes’ PAT was good, ending the first half 34-38.
The second half Stanberry defense took over, shutting the Jays out and ending the game 34-76.
