With the help from a teammate, Tate Johnson pulls down a Panther to stop the play. Johnson had five tackles, five assists, and two tackles for losses in the win.

 

Quarterback Owen DeRosier splits the Panther defense with his speed. DeRosier’s three touchdowns and three two-point conversions led the Wolves to a 44-12 victory over Mound City.

The East Atchison Wolves traveled to Mound City, Missouri, Friday, November 1, for the first round of District 6 football.

Mound City received the ball to start the game. The Panthers started on their own 15 yard line and moved the ball the length of the field in 15 plays to put the first points on the board. EA’s return man Owen DeRosier gave the Wolves great field position as he returned the ball to Mound City’s 38 yard line and five plays later DeRosier would take a quarterback keeper 25 yards to tie the game at 6 all. Derosier’s two point conversion was good, making the score 8-6. EA’s defense came alive, holding the Panthers to a four and out. With 2:25 left in the first quarter, EA was able to move the ball to the Mound City 17 yard line before the start of the second quarter.

Three plays later Mound City would stop the Wolves as they intercepted the ball on the three yard line. Mound City was pinned deep when they would connect on a go route for six points with 8:15 left on the clock. The two point conversion was no good, making the score 12-8 Mound City. With runs by Gavyn Irvine, River Dow, and Owen DeRosier, the Wolves moved the ball to the courtyard line before River Dow would take the hand-off and punch it in for six points. DeRosier’s pass to Cameron Kephart was good for the two point conversion, bringing the score to 16-12 Wolves with 2:09 left in the first half. EA would have a return for a touchdown called back on a penalty and that would end the first half.

The Wolves’ defense would come alive and shut Mound City’s offense down, not allowing a score in the second half. EA’s offense, with Blake Simmons back at quarterback, would continue to add points to the board. As the Wolves moved the ball down the field with runs by Simmons, DeRosier and Dow, they were able to take the kickoff to the one yard line before quarterback Blake Simmons would reach across the goal line to make the score 22-12. The defensive front for the Wolves wasn’t letting anyone through, holding the Panthers to a turnover on downs. With 3:35 left in the third quarter, Gavyn Irvine came up with an interception and returned to Mound City’s 17 yard line before getting tackled. Two plays later, DeRosier would take the hand-off up the middle and go 10 yards untouched for the touchdown. The two point conversion was no good, making the score 28-12. Mound City would move the ball to the 36 yard line and on a fourth and inches linebacker Gavyn Irvine would fill the gap and come up big with a quarterback sack with help from Gabe Harms. The Wolves would take over on the 31 yard line. On the next play, Simmons would hand off to Cameron Brooks who would go around the right end for six points. Simmons’ pass to DeRosier for the two point conversion was good, making the score 36-12. Following a squib kick Mound City would start on their 17 yard line where defensive end Cameron Kephart would get into the back field to break up the exchange and cause a fumble, recovered by Carter Wennihan on the eight yard line with 1:32 left in the third quarter. Three plays later Simmons would hit DeRosier on a bubble route for six points. DeRosier’s two point conversion was good making the score 44-12. This would be the final score of the game.

The Wolves move to the second round of District 6 action and will travel to Rock Port Friday night, November 8. Game time is at 7:00 p.m. at Blue Jay Stadium.
