December 16, 1949
• Misses Wilma Krutz and Delores Thompson have been selected from Rock Port High School to participate in an all-state chorus of 150 high schoolers from throughout Missouri. The singers will practice January 4-6 and then perform a concert in Joplin on Saturday, January 6.
• Great Britain’s king, King George VI, reviewed about 250 Berlin air lift personnel, including three from the Midwest, before they walked through London and then had lunch with the Lord Mayor. One of those from the Midwest was Rock Port’s Staff Sgt. Gilbert L. Olsen. Olsen is in the administrative section of the 59th air depot wing based at Burtonwood, the Lancaster air base.
• Guy Millsap of West Bend district southwest of Rock Port passed away Wednesday, December 13, at age 59. He was a lifelong resident of Atchison County, following the business of farming, and had also served for some years as a deputy sheriff under Harry Clement and Joe Gaines.
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Valiant Hombre,” “Johnny Allegro,” “Once More, My Darling,” “Dumbo,” and “Saludos Amigos.”

• The Rock Port Blue Jay basketball squad has new warmups that they received prior to the start of the season. The new warmups are royal blue and white and are double knit with JAYS written across the back.
• Willie Holmes and Tammy Garst were named the Rock Port FFA Barnwarming King and Queen at the yearly barnwarming November 26. Ninety students attended the dance, with everyone having to crawl through a straw tunnel to enter. They all participated in a square dance called by Gene Ingram.
• Robert Phelps, Sr., Rock Port, a foreman with the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative, was presented a Distinguished Service Award at the Missouri annual meeting in Jefferson City. Distinguished service awards are presented annually to employees completing 25 or more years of service.
• A county-wide Christmas pajama party was held December 3 for all Brownie, Junior, and Cadette Girl Scouts at the Tarkio Community Building. A total of 150 girls were in attendance. Barbara Taylor was chosen as the reigning queen.
• The Dairy Sweet will celebrate its first anniversary of the dining room and Christmas on December 17. The new facilities, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Max Thomas, measures 52×24 feet with a seating capacity of 62 people.

• Jason Leseberg brought in what is probably the last morel mushroom of the millennium. He picked it under a palm tree in California during a family vacation spent at Disneyland.
• Jeannie Montanelli opened her new business, K-9 Clips, offering full service dog grooming and pet supplies.
• Burke & Sons Lumber Company, Inc., with lumberyards located in Rock Port and Fairfax, is celebrating 50 years of doing business in Atchison County. Owned and operated by Willis Burke and his three sons, Charles, Reed, and Gilbert, Burke and Sons has been responsible for the development of three additions to the City of Rock Port: Skyline Drive Addition, Willi-Gwen Heights Addition, and Burke Circle.
