December 22, 1949
• Alvin Helfers of Craig is the new manager of the Community Feed and Grain company and took over his duties last Friday. Mr. Helfers takes the place of Ralph Burke, who resigned in order to give more time to his trucking and bulldozing business.
• Ten head of registered Shorthorn cattle, four of them imported recently from Scotland, were stolen Wednesday night of last week from the farm of Ray Wilkinson on Highway 275, about four miles north of Mound City, and to date the cattle have not been recovered nor the thieves apprehended.
• Monday broke all records at the Fairfax Post Office for the amount of mail handled in one day. Monday was the heaviest day in the history of the local office. Christmas business this year will run about 5% ahead of 1948.
• One hundred fifty-eight persons attended the American Legion’s annual turkey dinner at the school auditorium Monday evening. The feast was served by the Rupe’s Grove ladies.
December 26, 1974
• Remodeling will begin January 6, 1975, to help Community Hospital Association comply with fire safety codes required by the state and federal governments. The work will include replacing all hollow doors in the patient care areas of the old building with fire resistant doors. All the glass in the nursery will be replaced by wire-reinforced glass. The fire alarm and smoke detection system in the new addition of the hospital will be extended to the old portion. Special smoke barrier doors will also be installed. Ceilings on the first floor also will be covered with a material that has a two-hour resistance to fire to protect the steel beam supports.
• Twenty-five members of the 49’ers Club enjoyed the annual Christmas party at the Walnut Inn Wednesday, December 11. Following the dinner, the Sweet Adelines quartet gave a Christmas program in song.
• In a candlelight chancel setting decorating in keeping with the Christmas season, Miss Vickie Riley and Ted Simmons exchanged wedding vows. Rev. Reid Swindler read the double ring ceremony the evening of December 7 at the Christian Church in Fairfax.
• The annual basketball homecoming at Fairfax R-3 will be held Friday, January 3, following the game against Rock Port. King and queen candidates are Mark Hawkins, Hal Kottman, David Sly, Laura Bradfield, Reta McCartney, and Brenda Hawkins.
• Santa greeted all the little people and the adults gathered at 4:00 to learn the outcome of the drawing for gifts and the color television. Frank McQueen of Craig won the T.V.
December 23, 1999
• Fairfax kindergarten student Lauren Clark’s letter to Santa: “I have been a good girl this year. Please may I have a picture of you and me. I love you. My mom and dad have been good too. My mom wants a camera and my dad needs a race car. Love, Lauren Clark”
• Mary Ann and Herb Beggs presented teddy bears, handmade by Mary Ann, to each Community for Kids Preschool student Friday, December 17.
• The December Christmas Light winners included: Pat Fisher, Bill and Janice Walker, Gene and Sue Carder, Bob and Marilyn Alldredge, and Ted and Vickie Simmons.
• Wilbur Wright of Fairfax will observe his 80th birthday on Wednesday, December 29. He was born on that day in 1919. He served in the United States Navy, engaged in plumbing and farming, and was in the farm implement business.
