A two-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 29 in Atchison County Sunday, December 15, 2024, at 12:20 a.m. The wreck took place at the 108.8 mile-marker one mile south of Rock Port, Missouri. A speeding 2013 Kenworth T-6, driven by a 28-year-old Corning, Iowa, man, came upon a 2002 Freightliner, driven by a 67-year-old Miami, Florida, man, that was traveling the speed limit. As the Kenworth approached the rear towed unit of the Freightliner, it attempted to swerve and miss it, but struck the back of the towed unit of the Freightliner with the front corner of the driver’s side. The Kenworth travelled off the east side of I-29 and overturned, coming to rest on its passenger side facing west. The Freightliner came to a controlled stop on its wheels in the driving lane of I-29.
The Kenworth driver, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri, by an Atchison-Holt ambulance. The Freightliner driver, who was also wearing a seat belt, did not report any injuries at the scene. The Kenworth was totaled and towed from the scene by Double M Towing. The Freightliner sustained minor damage and was also towed by Double M.
The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper J.D. Schmedding, who was assisted by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office and Atchison-Holt Ambulance District.
