March 2, 1950

• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Manhattan Angel” with Gloria Jean and Ross Ford and “Mr. Belvedere Goes to College” with Clifton Webb, Shirley Temple, and Tom Drake.

• John Evasco’s Doberman Pinscher, three-year-old Major Suit of Rulego, took fourth place in the American Kennel Club Dog Show held in Kansas City on Sunday. There were 914 dogs entered in the show and 32 Dobermans. Mr. Evasco is one of the G.I. agriculture class instructors in the Fairfax School.

• E.D. Emanuel of Kingston, Georgia, has been employed as X-ray and laboratory technician at the Fairfax Community Hospital. Mr. Emanuel has his Ph.D. degree in biology from the Universal College in Chicago and has been employed at hospitals in Georgia and Alabama.

• Atchison County 4-Hers are celebrating National 4-H Club Week beginning March 4. The 1950 theme is “Better Living for a Better World.” There are 240 members in the 15 4-H clubs in the county.

March 6, 1975

• O’Neil Miles of Fairfax was the winner of the state corn growing contest, sponsored by the Missouri Farmers Association. His average yield of 174.3 bushels per acre was tops in what was one of the most disastrous corn years in recent history.

• A fire at the Wayne Bradfield farm Tuesday afternoon destroyed a garage and tool shed. Cause of the blaze was not determined.

• Everett A. Deardorff passed away from a heart attack March 3. He had operated a barbershop in Fairfax for 25 years, worked in the insurance business for 17 years, served 26 years as the Fairfax City Clerk, and was a member of several local organizations.

• Specials at Hunter’s Hy-Klas Store in Fairfax include: golden ripe bananas, 19¢ per pound; fresh Mexican strawberries, 59¢ per pint; Musselman’s applesauce, 59¢ for a 25-ounce jar; Folger’s coffee, 98¢ for a 1 pound can; Armour Star slab sliced bacon, $1.19 per pound; and Betty Crocker tuna helper, 69¢.

• Stan Osburn of Fairfax was coming home from Craig, Missouri, on Sunday, February 20, when a deer crossed his path and he hit it. The deer landed on the hood of the car and Stan didn’t want to stop because he was afraid of causing an accident. So, Stan drove home deer and all.

• H.C. Pennel, a 1973 Fairfax High School graduate, is now the minister of the Church of Christ in Pratt, Kansas. His first sermon was Sunday, February 13. He is married to the former Kathy Cleveland of Fairfax and they have three children.

• Holly Clement, Fairfax High School junior, competed in the Optimist Oratorical Contest at the Cardinal Inn in Maryville, Missouri, February 17. She was awarded first runner-up in the girls’ division of the contest. The title of Holly’s speech was “Growing Up in Today’s World.”
