March 16, 1950

• Enumerators for the 1950 decennial census for Atchison County have been named by the St. Joseph area office. There are seven women and five men who will be assigned territories as close to their homes as possible. The actual census will start April 1 and continue through May 15.

• Six young men known as the Tarkio College Male Ensemble entertained the Fairfax Kiwanis Club Tuesday at its noon luncheon. The group sang several numbers and was given generous applause. The men in the group include Jack Yates, Fred Patterson, Peck Prater, Bob Long, Jack Evans, and Warren Frahm and are under the direction of A.F. Humphrey.

• Construction of 6.9 miles of Route J, starting three miles east of Rock Port along Hwy. 275 toward Fairfax, will begin as soon as the frost is out of the ground. The road will be graded and surfaced with gravel or crushed stone. This construction will leave a gap of 1.7 miles to be constructed before the road connects with the highway at Fairfax.

March 20, 1975

• Local pharmacist Melvin Rogers recently completed a Missouri University continuing education course on ocular disease and treatment and has been selected as a teacher-associate. He is now qualified to instruct a credit course locally for students certified by the university.

• The first issue of “The Pulse of Community Hospital Association” is being circulated this week. The four-page house publication will be printed every other month for employees, auxiliary members, board members, physicians and friends of CHA.

• Basketball coaches from the 275 Conference selected the girls’ All-Conference team for the 1974-75 season. Fairfax’s Krista Hunter and Reta McCartney (unanimous) and Tarkio’s Jill Vette were the Atchison County selections.

• Choir members from the Christian, Presbyterian, and Methodist Churches will join their voices to present a Palm Sunday concert “Easter Folk Style.” Familiar Easter themes will be interwoven with Indian, mountain, and African American folk melodies and rhythm to make it a unique and moving presentation.

• The Fairfax P.E. students in grades kindergarten through third enjoyed a fun afternoon of bowling at the Blue Jay Bowl in Rock Port Thursday. Second grader Tommy Shepard was also celebrating his eighth birthday that day.

• The Fairfax Presbyterian Women held a Sewing Day for Missions March 9 at the home of Ethel Stoner in Fairfax. The ladies rolled 158 bandages, which will be shipped overseas to hospitals.

• Fairfax High School basketball players were recently selected for 275 Conference post-season honors. The All-Conference honorees were: 1st Team – Tiffany Taylor (unanimous), Lacy Sly (unanimous); and Honorable Mention – Traci Davis, Marcy Pennel, Katie Heitman, and Nic Smith. The District 32 All-Tournament Team members were Tiffany Taylor, Lacy Sly, and Katie Heitman.

• The Community for Kids Preschool students in Fairfax visited R&L Grocery in Fairfax on Thursday to learn about the basic food groups and to shop for groceries needed for a dinner that they are planning.
