• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Gallant Legion” with William Elliott, “Prison Warden” with Warner Baxter, and “Chicago Deadline” with Alan Ladd and Donna Reed.
• Rock Port firemen were called for help about 9:30 Tuesday morning when a belfry at the Goldenview schoolhouse northwest of town caught fire when the chimney burned out. The men chopped down the burning belfry in order to save the building.
• Tornadic winds all day Sunday created a smothering dust storm that made life miserable to anyone venturing outside. Damage was done to roofs, small buildings, television antennas, windmills, etc. from the wind and the heavy dust coated not only everything outside but made its way inside even the most insulated homes as well.
• Specials at the Rock Port Market include: Corn Kix or Cheerios, two 7 ounce packages for 27¢; and O.K. brand dill pickles, full quart for 19¢.
March 27, 1975
• The Rock Port Ministerial Alliance invites the public to come listen to Charlie Plumb, former Vietnam POW, who will be the guest speaker at the First Lutheran Church April 13. Plumb spent nearly six years in prison after his Navy fighter was downed near Hanoi on his 75th combat mission.
• Danny Mifflin and Jeannette Mulvania were named king and queen of the second annual Mardi Gras at Rock Port High School March 15.
• Jill Wanamaker, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Wanamaker of Rock Port, has been chosen as a member of the Cornhuskers cheerleader and pom-pon squad at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where she is a freshman.
• Brian Roach, a 2 1/2-year-old toddler who was visiting a residence on Birch Circle, wandered away from the home between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. March 23 and was found 2 1/2 miles east of Rock Port at the Hurtig residence an hour and a half later. It is believed that someone took him to the Hurtig home and dropped him off as it was a great distance to travel for a toddler, a short amount of time, and the child’s clothes showed that he had not walked on the road at all.
• Police Judge Leroy Howell held his last session of police court for the City of Rock Port Tuesday night at city hall and is now retiring after 19 years of service to law enforcement in the capacity of city police judge.
March 23, 2000
• The Peer Counselors donated $100 to the playground and to the After Prom committees.
• The Atchison County 4-H Carnival “4-H Goes Irish” was held on March 17 this year. The Velma Houts building was transformed into a 4-H casino where members could try their luck. Nathan Baldwin and Amber Graham, Lucky Clover Club members, were crowned king and queen.
• The Rock Port Police Department’s drug dog Gretchen has been very busy with narcotics detection this year. In addition to finds in Rock Port leading to the seizure of drug paraphernalia, narcotics, and a meth lab, she has also assisted in drug detection that led to numerous seizures and arrests in Iowa and Nebraska.
• Jonn Casey with Casey’s Crazy Creatures brought numerous reptiles and insects to the Rock Port School under the sponsorship of Chamberlain Funeral Home.
