• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Station West” with Dick Powell and Jane Greer, “Family Honeymoon” with Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray, and “Johnny Belinda” with Jane Wyman and Lew Ayres.
• Red R. McMahon was elected Mayor of Fairfax over S.J. Peterson in Tuesday’s election. The vote was McMahon 128 to Peterson 106. Worley Flanagan was chosen City Collector. W. R. Catron was reelected as the City Marshal. James Hunter, Roy Lester, and Charles Moore were elected as Aldermen and Marvin Schooler was selected as Police Judge.
• Melvin Brothers Home and Auto Supply Store advertised a Big 10-Day Sale on famous Firestone Champion Tires – $10.95 for 6.00×16 plus tax and your old tire. At Moore Bros. Oil Company, the same size tires, but Goodyear brand, are $10.75 plus tax.
• For Easter dinner at the Blue Bell Cafe, Edna and Charles Wichael are having ham or chicken for 65¢ (dessert is extra).
• Mr. and Mrs. James A. Blevins of Winnipeg, Canada, visited here over the weekend with his sister, Mrs. Getta Black. It was the first time in 14 years the brother and sister had been together.
April 10, 1975
• The Fairfax High School Athletic Banquet will be held Tuesday, April 21, at the high school cafeteria. Meals are $3 per plate.
• A Missouri farmer turned groundskeeper at Denver University was recently given accolades for success in bringing beauty to the large campus. John Close, former Fairfax resident, is the assistant yard foreman at DU, a job he has held for the past seven and a half years. There are 72 tillable acres on the main campus and three major flower beds in addition to the Humanities Gardens. John helped with the removal of all 148 diseased elm trees and is watching over the replacement cottonwoods with all the anxiety of a new father.
• At the regular meeting of the Fairfax R-3 Board of Education, recently elected members Eugene Bradfield, Glen Hawkins, and Bernard Heits were sworn in and Jim Fisher was named president.
• Larry Flanagan from Hunter’s Grocery and Don Kerr and Joetta Hicks of Kerr’s Market were in St. Joseph the first of the week attending a two-day meat cutting clinic conducted by Affiliated Grocery.
April 6, 2000
• Several hundred gallons of oil-based and latex paint, antifreeze, pesticides, cleaners, and stripping agents were collected at the household hazardous waste collection at the old Atchison County Landfill site on April 1.
• The Fairfax Sorosis members met for their final meeting of the year Monday, March 27, 2000, at the Fairfax Christian Church. Eighteen members and one guest listened to guest speaker Doris Ann Schmidt of Tarkio speak about tea and teapots. She displayed a collection of her teapots, many of which came from trips to Great Britain.
• The Fairfax Early Childhood students got to ride “Pecas” on Tuesday, March 28. The students have been learning about farms and farm animals.
• The Fairfax FFA Floriculture Team placed second out of 24 teams to advance to state. The team members are Dustin Graves, Brice Ball, Jack Fries, and Miles Smith. Dustin Graves placed third individually in the event. Jack Fries received Area I FFA recognition in Turf and Landscape Management Proficiency.
• Tiffany Taylor, a student athlete at Fairfax High School, was recently selected to represent Northwest Missouri and the United States as a member of the Northwest Missouri All-Stars. The basketball team will play in Limerick, Ireland, this summer.
