May 18, 1950

• Rock Port’s police force and chief city mail carrier have taken on metropolitan airs in recent days. John Hunt, the mail carrier, has blossomed forth in a city-style uniform of light grey, while “Irish” Andermann, policeman, had his car lettered with the word “Police” in big letters that can be read from a distance.

• Rock Port High School had an all-time high attendance at the alumni banquet. A total of 350 graduates and guests assembled at the annual meeting Friday of last week at the Memorial Building. The oldest class represented was 1891, with members of that class, Mrs. Fannie Moore Smith of Riverton, Iowa, and Miss Elizabeth Cunnington and Wm. Tate, both of Tarkio, in attendance.

• Mr. and Mrs. Joe McCoy sold Joe’s Place to George Schmidt of Clarinda, Iowa, who has leased the refreshment place to Mrs. Cokley of Burlington Junction. They will operate as the Recreation Cafe.

• John H. Gebhards passed away Wednesday morning of last week. He was born December 28, 1869, near Phelps City and had lived his entire life of 80 years in Atchison County.

May 15, 1975

• Rock Port R-II will graduate 41 seniors this coming week. Commencement is scheduled for May 22 at Blue Jay Stadium at 8:00 p.m.

• Specials at Greenley’s Market in Rock Port include: fresh, crisp head of lettuce, 19¢ per pound; California navel oranges, 10 for 79¢; fresh sweet strawberries, 2 pint boxes for 89¢; G & W sugar, 5 pound bag for $1.39; and fresh pork cutlets, 99¢ per pound.

• The Rock Port High School girls’ track team participated in the district track event in Maryville May 2. Rock Port’s Marlene Walter took second in the hurdles with a time of 12.1 and qualified for state.

• Rock Port boys took fourth place with 11 points at the state track meet May 10 in Warrensburg. Barry Minter made all 11 points for the Blue Jays. He took first in the 120 hurdles with a time of 15.2, 1/10th of a second off the state record. Minter ran the 100 yard dash 10 minutes after the high hurdles and took fifth place at 10.6. He attempted to defend his championship in the 180 low hurdles but placed second with a time of 20.5. He did not place in the high jump.

May 11, 2000

• Jordan Shrader broke the school and 275 Conference record in the pole vault on Friday, May 5, with a vault of 13’2”. The Blue Jays won the 275 Conference Track Meet with a team score of 138 points.

• The Rock Port High School boys’ golf team placed second at Districts, thus qualifying for State. The top three players for the Jays were Kalen Smith with an 82, Jay Hunter with an 85, and Nate Bunton with an 86.

• Mr. Cretsinger’s 5th grade class at Rock Port Elementary got to meet their pen pals from Farragut, Iowa. All the students met at the park in Hamburg, Iowa, on Friday, May 5, and enjoyed a fun day together.

• Construction of the new addition of the United Methodist Church in Rock Port has begun.

• Mandy and Chad Ottmann of Rock Port welcomed a son, Carter Elliott, on April 26. He weighed 8 pounds and was 21 inches long.
