• Mrs. Willis Johnson went to Kansas City to enroll in the Florence Utt Training School for a course in hotel hostessing. She plans to sell her business, the Tot and Teen Style Shop, here.
• A Rural Youth Organization (RYO) for young people between the ages of 18 and 30 was formed at a meeting at the North Polk Schoolhouse. This is the first club of its kind to be organized in Atchison County and five neighboring counties. Byron H. Million was elected president.
• Father Fred Yehle, the priest at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Tarkio, will leave next week for a Holy Year of Jubilee month-long pilgrimage to Rome and other points in Europe. While in Rome, Father Yehle and the other group members will have an audience with Pope Pius XII.

• Specials at the Market Basket in Tarkio include: fresh fryers, 59¢; chicken breasts, 89¢ per pound; chicken thighs, 79¢ per pound; 24 12-ounce cans of Schlitz Beer (not cooled), $5.39; and six 12-ounce cans of Pepsi Cola, $1.29.
• Funeral services for James Verdin Petry, 54, were held July 1. Petry came to Tarkio in 1945, where he began farming on his own farm. He also worked at several jobs in the county. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the European Theatre for three years, and received the Purple Heart and three Battle Stars with Oak Leaf clusters.
• The Mule Barn will be the scene of much excitement in the celebration of the 4th of July this week, with a special matinee of “Company” at the Barn, followed by a benefit barbecue and barn dance at Charles and Jean Enos’ farm north of Tarkio.
• Tarkio’s Bicentennial Chairmen, Mrs. Mason Houghton and Mrs. J.B. Shaum, Jr., along with Mr. Houghton and Mr. Shaum, will attend a Bicentennial Picnic Saturday, July 5, at the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City, Missouri, upon invitation from the Governor and Mrs. Christopher Bond.

• Delores (Smith) and Bill Harrington of Tarkio will be observing their 50th wedding anniversary June 30, 2000. They were married on that day in 1950 at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port with Reverend Hauser Winter officiating. The Harringtons lived in the Rock Port area when they were first married, but have lived at Route 2, Box 93, east of Tarkio for the past 39 years.
• Steve Hoffrogge of Tarkio has finally decided to hang up his uniform after 25 1/2 years of dedicated service to the Commercial Vehicle Division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Steve began his career on December 1, 1974. His title was Commercial Vehicle Supervisor II and he was in charge of the weigh scales on I-29 one mile south of the Iowa state line.
• Plans were finalized and revealed Wednesday, June 21, for the continuation of Tarkio Family Practice Center in Tarkio with James K. Hunter, M.D., and Pam Davis, F.N.P., providing unison coverage following the resignation of Brent Hrabik, M.D.
• A strong wind and hail storm passed through Atchison County on Friday, June 23. The hail damaged corn and soybeans.
• A new bridge is being built about two miles south of Westboro on Atchison County Road 282 off of Route O. The bridge is being built by employees of the Atchison County Highway Department.
