July 21, 1950

• Truby Shineman, Roger Bowness, Henry Moore, and Dean Johnson played with theAmerican Legion Junior All Stars in a game Sunday night at the City stadium with the Modern Motors team of St. Joseph. The St. Joseph team won 19 to 2.

• With many contestants already here, the fourth annual 4-State Roundup starts Thursday evening and continues through Sunday with a performance each evening. Cowboys and cowgirls are here from many points in the southwest, west, and northwest. To date it seems Oklahoma and Texas have the most representatives.

• B.P. Hunter Stores are holding “Rootin’ Tootin’ Rodeo Prices” in Fairfax with the following specials: Chase and Sanborn coffee, 2 lb. limit, 75¢; red pitted cherries, 2 No. 2 cans for 47¢; and Ball mason zinc lids, a dozen for 29¢.

July 24, 1975

• An incubator has been set up at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax. The incubator, which cost about $1,700, will be used for premature babies or other infants who might face a difficult start without the added support.

• Among those attending FACS (Fertilizer Ag Chemicals and Seed) Day at the MFA Research farm south of Marshall were Fairfax area men Frank McQueen, Bill Umbarger, and Dean Wiley, Fairfax MFA Exchange manager. They viewed the early progress of demonstrations that will be on display during the MFA Agri-Fair August 25-29.

• Community Hospital Association in Fairfax has joined the computer age. The hospital recently installed an IBM System 32 computer. All drugs will be coded using the computer, as well as laboratory and X-ray procedures. Records of patients and vendors will be easier to retrieve and budget and special forms material will also be computerized.

• Mrs. Lettie M. Ware, 100, of Quitman, Missouri, passed away July 22 at the Fairfax hospital. She would have celebrated her 101st birthday Saturday. A former linotype operator, she had been employed at the Maryville Tribune, the Quitman Record, and the Skidmore News.

July 20, 2000

• James Howard Thompson of Fairfax began his duties as manager of MFA Agri Service in Fairfax Monday, July 17, 2000. James is replacing Gerald Wheeler, who has transferred to Maysville, Missouri.

• The beginning of a new century presents the opportunity to document Atchison County as it exists today. In 1905, H. F. Stapel published a Biographical History of Atchison County. The history was complete with photographs and personal histories of families. Now, a group of interested citizens would like to update the history of Atchison County in the year 2000. They plan to hold an informational meeting.

• Community for Kids Preschool students in Fairfax along with Herb and Mary Ann Beggs set up a lemonade stand in front of the preschool Thursday, July 13. The students took turns working the stand throughout the morning.

• The Atchison County Swim Team held a dog wash in Fairfax Saturday, July 15. They raised $209 for the swim team.
