July 28, 1950

• It is pretty well agreed that last week’s 4-State Roundup provided the best rodeo that has so far been held here. Frank Freas of Vinita, Oklahoma, won $305.34 in three events and was named the overall champion cowboy. He won the gold and silver belt buckle awarded by the Legion.

• A load of south Missouri fence posts was spilled on the roadway last Wednesday morning. A driver from Stover, Missouri, attempted to turn the corner a mile south of Tarkio onto Highway 59 when, due to excessive speed, the truck turned over, scattering the posts on the south side of the highway.

• Billy Umbarger shared his National Boy Scout Jamboree experiences with the Fairfax Kiwanis Club at the club’s meeting Tuesday. The national jamboree was held at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, some two weeks ago. Billy gave a fine account of it in his talk, which was intensely interesting to his listeners.

July 31, 1975

• The anniversary edition of the Community Hospital Auxiliary cookbook will be going to the printers in a short while. A few more recipes are needed to round out the issue as the committee is checking carefully to make sure no recipes that were printed in the first edition are used in this one.

• Mr. and Mrs. Russel Ireland are building a new home in northeast Fairfax and the superstructure is well underway. The Dearl Johnson construction crew is doing the carpenter work.

• Danny Clark, six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. DeWayne Clark, suffered a fractured right arm Saturday when he fell from a tree in a neighbor’s yard. The arm has been placed in a cast and he is making a good recovery.

• Around 40 people from Fairfax, including Cubs and their families, journeyed to Camp Geiger last Thursday evening for a tapping ceremony into the Mic-O-Say tribe. Cubmaster Bill Walker was tapped into Mic-O-Say as an honorary warrior. He was given the tribal name of “Big Flowing Yellow Mane.”

• Auxiliary members and a few guests were shown how much they are appreciated by Community Hospital Association last Thursday, July 20, at a luncheon and awards presentation. Special recognition went to the Aid Association of Lutherans of Rock Port, Tammy Sly and the Fairfax Forum, and Larry and Georganne Goodloe. Dolores Hawkins was named Auxilian of the Year.

• Members of the junior high United Methodist Youth Group made cookies at the church in Fairfax on Saturday, July 22, for Fairfax shut-ins.

• R & L Grocery has added a smoking and catering service to their business in Fairfax. Roger and Lou Ann Pennel recently purchased a state-of-the-art smoker, dubbed the R & L Rollin’ Smoker, as an added service. The smoker can hold up to 280 pounds of meat at one time and the smoker also includes a convection oven.

• The citizens of Fairfax will have an opportunity to vote for Junior Miss and Miss Fairfax queen candidates during this year’s Fairfax Fair contests. Ballots will be published in the Fairfax Forum and residents are asked to vote for one candidate in each category, sign the ballot, then mail it in or drop it off at the Forum office.
