September 22, 1950

• Mrs. John H. Stewart of Tarkio, a missionary in Pakistan for 40 years, is conducting a class on “The Near East” at a School of Missions held at the St. Joseph First Christian Church.

• Dr. O.F. Kettelkamp, after eight years as pastor of the Tarkio Methodist Church, will go to the pastorate of the church at Cameron. Rev. E. R. Bayley, who has been pastor of the Liberty church, will come to Tarkio.

• Mr. and Mrs. Robert Van Leuven of Tarkio celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday. The couple was married September 17, 1890, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Vogel, Mrs. Van Leuven’s parents. Five of those people present for their wedding were also present at this gathering.

• United States Senator Forrest C. Donnell expects to be in Tarkio Wednesday, September 27, to greet old friends and new and to speak on Main Street in the interest of his campaign for reelection.

September 25, 1975

• The Tarkio College Music Department is offering private lessons in piano, voice, organ, and all band and orchestra instruments to students and adults in northwest Missouri and southwest Iowa.

• Grannie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor in Tarkio reminds everyone that they are open nights after home high school football games. Besides their 16 flavors of ice cream, they also have hot chocolate and coffee and have recently added cinnamon rolls.

• The Tarkio Indians football team walked away with its second shutout in as many games this past Friday when they beat the Princeton Tigers 14-0.

• A new program has begun at Tarkio High School this year involving foreign exchange teachers. Rosa Maria Carvalho from Fortaleza, Brazil, teaches English and Portuguese in her country. While she is here, she will be observing all of the teachers.

• Maurice J. Buckley, 53, well-known lumber dealer in the Tarkio and Burlington Junction communities for the past 20 years, passed away September 23. Except for a few years in youth as well as during the war, he was a lifelong Tarkio resident. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April of 1941 and was aboard the USS Lexington when it was sunk in Pearl Harbor and on the USS West Virginia when it was sunk in the Coral Sea.

• Tarkio High School junior golfer Laurie Whittington continued her reign as a match medalist on Tuesday, September 12, shooting a 44 on her home course. Things looked a little tense when a ball went into the water, but she collected herself and finished strong. This is the fifth consecutive match where she has won low score honors.

• The new Pamida discount store in Tarkio held a sneak preview Sunday evening, September 17.

• The Tarkio City Council and Tarkio Rodeo Association signed a resolution allowing the rodeo association to place camper hookups on city property south of the South City Park Ball Field.

• After 25 years, Rosalie Woodring handed over her duties as Tarkio City Clerk to Becky Schomburg. Rosie was appointed by Mayor Roy McIntosh in 1975 and has since served under Mayors Bill Stewart, Chuck Sheppard, and Vilas Jones.
