• Specials at Hy-Klas Food Stores in Tarkio include: Charmin toilet tissue, 4 rolls for 29¢; cured ham hocks, 29¢ per pound; Del Monte California spinach, 2 No. 2 cans for 35¢; Sunkist lemons, 12 for 33¢; and golden ripe bananas, 29¢ for 2 pounds.
• Dr. Scott Withrow of Akron, Ohio, will be the speaker during Spiritual Life Week beginning October 29 and continuing through November 3 at the United Presbyterian Church in Tarkio. Dr. Withrow is a 1918 Tarkio College graduate.
• Max Van Hoozer, 19 FFA boys, and bus driver Lester Morton attended the American Royal livestock show in Kansas City.
• One of the county’s oldest residents, Mrs. Eva Tourtelotte of Westboro, Missouri, observed her 96th birthday Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida Norton in Westboro. At the Sunday school hour, she was visited by a group of 22 pupils and teachers. In the afternoon, about 45 friends and relatives showered her with gifts and cards.
October 30, 1975
• An adult ceramics class, under the direction of Rick Holst, will be offered at Tarkio High School. Hand building as well as wheel throwing methods will be used to make functional finished pots.
• Mrs. Marie Harbin received a second place trophy at the TOPS Rally held in Liberty, Missouri, October 21. Marie received the award, a tie, for having lost a total of 90 pounds in six months.
• The Tarkio Rotary Club presented a fun house to the city this week for the South City Park in Tarkio. This was made possible by funds raised in 1974 and the equipment, at a cost of $1,275, was installed last week near the shelter houses at the park.
• The North Polk Schoolhouse has been donated as a historical gift and will be moved to a site just east of the Mule Barn Museum in Tarkio. It will be renovated and outfitted in a manner familiar to former pupils of country schools.
October 26, 2000
• The Tarkio High School Marching Band placed 3rd in their division of the Northwest Missouri State University Homecoming Parade in Maryville on Saturday, October 21.
• Tarkio High School junior Laurie Whittington placed 17th in the Missouri State Golf Championships held October 16 and 17 in Columbia. She shot an 89 both days for a total score of 178 and 17th place out of 120 golfers.
• Diego Jaramillo of Quito, Ecuador, is a foreign exchange student attending Tarkio High School this year.
• Ask Elsie Fae column: “You Heard It Here First – A few days ago when I was a little late picking up my sister, I explained that I had stopped to chat briefly with Joanne Curnutt, who was cleaning out a ditch on Maple Street. This bit of information sent Edna into deep shock, and gasping for breath, she said, ‘Good grief! Is she having to do community service?’ (The answer is no.)”
• Marge Hamilton of Tarkio is enjoying retirement, having officially retired from Firstar Bank in Tarkio on September 29. Marge served as elementary school secretary in Tarkio before becoming a teller at Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio, now known as Farmers State Bank. After working at Town and Country Drug in Rock Port, she started working for Mercantile Bank in Tarkio (which later changed its name to Firstar) in 1993.
